Kitchen designer
- lizzie (22nd Aug 2006 - 14:21:12)

We are planning a new kitchen and looking for someone who can help us with designing but not looking to sell us a kitchen (which we have already chosen). If anyone knows of someone in the local area I would be very grateful to get some details - many thanks

Hi
Can't help but would advise NOT to use Surrey Marble and Granite company if you were thinking of a granite worktop or anything. Granite itself fine but just had them drill a hole in the worktop in the wrong place and now they deny all responsibillity! A costly mistake!

Also under their recommendation appointed plumbers resulting in a gas leak and a waste disposal that spewed its contents all over the place! Now have a spaghetti junction of pipes so much so cant store anything under the sink! Just changed my washing machine too and it appears that was supporting the granite as it was near impossible to remove the machine!

Would be so useful if this site had a recommended tradesmen section as there seem to be so many "cowboys" around!

My husband is a kitchen designer....he always recommends people use a member of the KSA when buying a kitchen to avoid the 'cowboys'.

A list of member companies can be found on www.ksa.co.uk.

Don't consider Conquest Kitchens in Farlington.
Disaster followed by disaster. Very costly mistake.

...or MFI!

One of the best ways is to take advantage of the free design service done by the large chains or more specialist firms and to get them to quote, If you have chosen a supplier already you could let them look at the 'chain' design, but not take up the 'chain' quote! After all it is a competitive world out there.

Kevin,

Perhaps you are unaware, but just for your information most Kitchen Designers, including my husband, work on a commission only basis.

It takes about 2-3 hours to plan a kitchen properly, if you are a professional designer. Would you be prepared to do it for nothing???

Please avoid Magnet in Guildford. They are very keen when you are looking but if there are any problems after installation and they have been paid (They insist on payment before work begins) be prepared for long and arduous negotiations. Also beware, they can keep going longer than most of us and I have to admit I gave up after three long letters to Head Office (each of which got a "thank you for your letter we are looking into it" reply). However, nothing ever came of my complaints. I sympathise with your husband Eneida, who I am sure does a good job but unfortunately there are an awful lot of cowboys out there even among the legitimate and national firms, so it doesn't surprise me that some folk just take what they can get and take the design and get it done for half the price by a local tradesman.
