Racism in Liphook?
- Andrew Clarke (14th Aug 2006 - 17:11:43)
We have recently moved to Liphook and have been under a barrage of complaints from a few 'older' neighbors regarding the fact that we have deliveries sometimes. Strange but true? They have even complained to the estate agent that we obtained the property from saying that before we moved in nobody came down the road, I can not think why! But now we live here we have lowered the tone due to having a delivery or two a week. I know stop laughing. It gets worse, one neighbor has written to the Estate Agent saying that we should not have used 'black removal men' (her words) as they also lower the tone.
As a parent I am trying to teach my children not to be racist and that all people are equal. How can I do this when my neighbors are obvioulsy facists and racists themselves.
Any comments? I have never experienced this type of abuse anywhere before.

Well how strange..............I've never heard anything like it. Where do you live? I presume someone lived there before so wonder if they had any problems or whether you have some how managed to upset the neighbours without knowing?
I presume you are having normal deliveries during normal hours (not kebabs at 4am!). If so then don't worry I am sure there will soon be something else in Liphook to distract the neighbours - maybe a jazz club :)

Andrew,
Welcome to Liphook, sorry to hear of the problems you have already encountered. Take no notice mate and continue to educate the kids the correct way.
You will find some more "isms" around Liphook as you go, here's a crash course to get you started.
Sainsburyism
Youthism
Carism
Pubism
Now sit back and wait for more.
On a serious note, welcome again especially to this site. These neighbours of yours are the exception to the rule. The majority of the people are all friendly and although most of us on here like a good moan its a useful media to all that wish to use it.
Regards,
Steve

Andrew,
Have been folowing your posts on various threads and why is it, do think, that I get the whiff of something distinctly agricultural that usually eminates from under the tail of a cow!
Keep going though, at the very least it raises a smile.

- Andrew Clarke (14th Aug 2006 - 23:49:16)
Hi all. Thanks for the posts. If you have followed my earlier postings regarding the water etc then you may understand why I was angry at the 'old folk' of Liphook, I was experiencing the new neighbors attitudes and then looking for some positives for moving to Liphook and came across even more moaning on liphook.co.uk. To be honest we are really enjoying living here and we are looking to get more involved in the community. Even though we only moved from Haslemere. As for the three neighbors - I had our solicitor write to them and threaten them with ASBO's maybe they will all appear in a BBC documentry, was it OAP's on ASBO's. Might help put Liphook on the map! Mind you it was very funny watching these people surround a Lynx lorry and tell the driver he was not allowed to deliver our new computer as they do not allow deliveries down our road, the driver told me he thought it was some kind of TV show being filmed in secret. They were all standing around the trucks cab waving there arms about in disgust at him. One of these gentleman is 89 yes 89 years of age.
The deliveries are all in working hours and as our children are only 2 and 4 we do not make any noise or have people over that make noise. Our only crime is to have a few deliveries when we moved in and to use 'black' removal men.
If we could post videos to this site I managed to video them all standing in the road blocking an argos truck that was delivering our daughters new bed. They are all screaming at the driver saying get out get out no deliveries down this road. Its very very funny. Especially when you see that I have videos of two of three having there own deliveries.
Anyway enough venting on here from me.

Andrew
Now I understand your rant against the 'oldies' of Liphook. But it sounds as if you just have some very nasty neighbours - thankfully you'll find this is not typical of the people of Liphook - the old, the young or those in the middle.

Andrew,
How bizarre!! I'm sure we're all wondering where you live in Liphook....I've never come across anything like that, although I was reported to the Police when I first moved here for painting my fence!!! (no action was taken ;) )
Actually, Liphook has already been in the national news regarding ASBOs...I think it was the first one ever issued, but I may be wrong.
Allan,
I've never had a Brazilian but I'll take your word for it!

And Steve..
So Sainsbury's, youth, cars and pubs issues are all 'isms'.
So Sainsbury's has not increased the traffic in the village, and if it has we don't care because we can get 2p off a jar of coffee. And there is no issue with youth -(The poor chap who was beaten up by a bunch of thugs in the Headley Road on Friday night might see it differently) and all our pubs are wonderful and the more advertising banners the better. How about 'Head in the sand-ism' or maybe 'Oh deary me lets not make a fuss-ism'.
Don't take it too seriously ;)

Come on! give us a clue as to where you live so we can all have a drive round in our Vans/Lorries & Caravans etc. Even if it just to get the old wrinklies blood pressure up!

Liz,
2p on a jar of coffee! I wish they had put it up on a billboard outside I could have driven around again to have another look.
Violence in the village! Ironic you mention this, 1.30pm Newtown Rd today, two blokes with their hands around each others throats after an incident with their cars. Both of them well in their sixties. To act like a thug is not dependant on age.
Signs outside pubs! are we unique in Liphook to be the only ones with this? More to the point other than you and a couple of others on here who really cares anyway.
ps I never taken you too seriously.

I am pleased we have something better to discuss than Sainsburys- boring! As regards racism- you cannot be sure if the elderly gentleman was racist unless you set up another delivery date with a non coloured van driver and watched whether he made a fuss about that! Do you live in a private road? Someone also of that age in Liphook has probably not had a great deal of experience with non white people, and at his age it would be pointless to try and change him. Of course it is wrong, but you could also explain to your children that not everybody on this earth shares the same point of view which is why there is also religious bigotry. England as the elderly person knew it years ago was completely different and he probably finds modern life very confusing and stressful. I know I do at times and I was told today I only look 35!

Andrew,
Why not invite your elderly nieghbours round for tea? Then you could show them that you're not the evil person they seem to think you are!
Generally speaking, elderly folk don't cope too well with change - and it sounds as if you've rocked their quite little boat a bit more than they can deal with. They don't mean to make your life difficult, but they appear to think that you intend to make theirs so. You need to convince them that nothing will change and their nice quiet little road will stay that way. What happens when you speak to them about it? Or is it too late to get on friendly terms?
Welcome to Liphook, by the way!
Janet

Re: Racism in Liphook?
- Andrew Clarke (15th Aug 2006 - 22:24:04)
Hi Janet,
To late I am affraid. When we moved in I introduced myself to all the neighbours and invited them over for drinks these three residents were not interested. The racist is a lady and she is not that old and yes we do live in a private road.
The only reason I found out about her comments was the fact that she had written a letter to the estate agent, who then telephoned us in shock saying that they had received a letter stating that the residents of ********** did not want black removal men in their road, not OUR road but it is THEIR road.
I must add that the removal men were very polite, did not use any foul language and took great care with all of our items.
Now we know what to expect from them we fcan deal with it better and we may name and shame them once I have established the legal position on that.
Thanks for your posts on the matter.

Steve
I can assure you that a lot of people care deeply about development, traffic issues and the appearance of the village. Sadly I know there are also quite a few who don't give a damn.
No wonder the Parish council wants its own website!!

I thought this thread was about racism not rantism.
Fishing is good this season. never had so many bites & so easy as well.
Mind you catching the same fish over and over again is very tedious, still cast out and sit back.

Sorry Steve for going off track but it was your post that had the first reference to Sainsbury-ism. Also, didn't think this site was quite so rigid.

Hi Andrew
Welcome to Liphook, I am sorry to read all this C**P you have received from some small minded OAP's.
I agree they should be named and shamed and be told to wake up to the 21st Century.
As for the deliveries, even if it is a private road to your house and their houses, your deliveries can not be blocked or stopped.
You will see this village is fantastic and full of great spirit.
The carnival is only just around the corner and it is I would say the best carnival for miles around with everyone coming together for a great night.
I have been doing the carnival myself now for 14 years with the Likely Lads first then spliting off and setting up The Newtownies with my Uncle. I am 36 and love making a fool of myself for 1 night for other peoples entertainment and can see myself doing it for another 14 years.
Enjoy the village and ignore the idiots
