Wisteria (out of control)
- dave mc grath (11th Jul 2012 - 14:05:22)

Hi, does anybody know about how to properly prue wisterias to encourage flowering? I know that there are certain times of the season to do this but i don't know when or how it should be done. I have two that need urgent attention, of course willing to pay for this service. Thankyou in anticipation!

Prune into shape in August i.e. cut back or train trailing stems/excess growth as required. In February prune side shoots more aggressively to 4-6 buds (it takes a while!). This should produce an abundance of flowers. I followed this advice for several years and even got my wisteria trained onto and flowering on a north wall. Have since moved house and unfortunately could not bring the wisteria with me!

Hello Dave,
I totally agree with Liz's correct advise.
As the case is often with medical / horticultural advise - it is best to see the plant 'in the flesh' to give you the best instructions.
For instance, your wisteria may need re-training, i.e. reshaping the basic framework of the plat's main trunk. A well trained plant is easier to look after and gives better displays. Please feel free to contact me for horticultural advise / visit / gardening work. Email me at da_rl@hotmail.com

On a similar point, do you know if wisteria damages brickwork, gutters etc? I'm not sure whether to put up trellis or just let mine use the house as a frame. I know it looks great but I don't fancy a big repair bill later! Thanks.

Will not damage brickwork but will push away gutters if it gets behind them. I was advised to keep my wisteria below the level of the first floor window sills to keep it manageable - proved to be very good advice! Wisteria does not stick to walls and will need support such as a trellis or wires - I'm sure the experts can advise!

Hello Tony,
In total agreement with Liz (again) with regards to safe on brickwork but may grow around pipework and into cavities.
Wisteria beauty is more majestic on mature chunkier trunks / stems. They require sturdy support such as thick wire frames, most trellises are unlikely to do that job.
