Re: Tuesday 31st July evening

Gurkha soldiers have been a vital part of the British Army for almost two hundred years. They have fought bravely in both the First and Second World War. Since then they have served with distinction in Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Borneo, Cyprus, The Falklands, Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan. At its height it was believed that there were over 110,000 Gurkha troops but now they number less than 3,500. The Victoria Cross has been awarded thirteen times to Gurkha soldiers.
Rambuhadra Limbu was approximately 26 years old, and was a Lance-Corporal in the 2nd Battalion, 10th Princess Mary's Own Gurkha Rifles, British Army during the Indonesian Confrontation when, on 21 November 1965 in Sarawak, Borneo, Lance-Corporal Rambahadur Limbu was in an advance party of 16 Gurkhas when they encountered about 30 Indonesians holding a position on the top of a jungle-covered hill. The lance-corporal went forward with two men, but when they were only 10 yards from the enemy machine-gun position, the sentry opened fire on them, whereupon Limbu rushed forward and killed him with a grenade. The remaining enemy combatants then opened fire on the small party, wounding the two men with the lance-corporal who, under heavy fire, made three journeys into the open, two to drag his comrades to safety and one to retrieve their Bren gun, with which he charged down and killed many of the enemy.
Captain Rambuhadra Limbu VC, MVO is one of just eight surviving recipients of of the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration awarded for valour ‘in the face of the enemy’ to members of the armed forces of Britain and the Commonwealth.
On Tuesday 31st July at the Gurkha Chaurtari Nepalese Restaurant in Station Road, Liphook you will have a unique opportunity to meet Captain Limbu and shake the hand of a truly brave man.

Those of us fortunate enough to get a seat at the special evening at the Gurkha Chuartari Restaurant this week enjoyed a feast to remember.
The cuisine and the service was first class, I particularly remember the pork and spinach and the surprise dessert was a nice touch.
Although we were there to meet and honour Captain Rambuhadur Limbu VC, MVO, he and his family were very welcoming, it was a delightfully informal affair with many people moving from table to table and making new friends.
Best wishes to Captain Rambuhadur this week end as he travels back to Nepal and very many thanks to Sudha and her staff for a very memorable evening.

At the time,as the Olympics was in full swing,I felt that the lovely dinner with the VC at the Gurkha Chautari would never get a mention in the local paper....
BUT..guess what?...on the 24th August the LIPHOOK HERALD produced half a page feature about the VC dinner and more importantly about how he acquired it.
Congratulations to Paul Robinson who very cleverly brought to get his VC book autographed that evening!
Thank you to Liphook Herald and to everyone who reads it and shares the amazement of Captain Rambahadur's bravery.
Please do visit the restaurant Facebook page to see all 120 photos.
Thank you to the Alan Baker the Editor for posting a similar article on the Liphook Talkback News Section.
Dhanyabad.
