Olympic Flame Celebration
- Dawn (9th Jul 2012 - 12:08:46)
Liphook's own Dom Raeyen will be carrying the Olympic Flame on the 16th July and that is going to be in Rogate.
I am definately going to go and cheer the torch but does anyonw know what time it starts?
Dom's nomination story [taken from the olympic site]
Dom has coached nearly a hundred juniors to play Tchoukball recently he took me and 11 juniors to THE WORLD YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS in AUSTRIA!For years i've been coaching kids to play tchoukball from grassroots right up to GB U18 level. I hope to coach so many more in the future I want to take them to international success and I want to teach them to play the game the way it should be played - through fair play good sportmanship and playing with the opposition not against them. Tchoukball is a strange sport in that kids are allowed and in fact welcomed to compete alongisde adults. It gives me so much joy to look out onto a court and to see someone that i've coached thriving at the top level. Overall what i'd love to do more than anything is to pass on my passion for the game to every kid I coach and I think the game would be so much better off having players who care

I know it goes through Petersfield at 8am. The runners stop at Churchers College and then it's driven through to Rogate.
Be warned tho, was at a meeting with EHDC on Friday and they seem to think (based on information from other venues) that crowds will start to arrive from 6am!
I would have thought EHDC had the info on their website they were certainly giving out leaflets of the route on Friday.
Thought about going but that early morning start (and the parking problem) is rather putting me off. Train would be vastly expensive at that time in the morning (and probably unreliable!)

We were up at 6 for an early breakfast and has a houseful of boys whose parents had also agreed for them to have the day off to see the flame. (Other schools in the area have done this but not Bohunt). We had been warned to get there early so we planned to leave at 7, we were about 20 mins late when we headed off to Petersfield to get a good spot. We had intended to go to Rogate but I just couldn’t work out which bit Dom would be running so in the end we plumped for Petersfield.
We parked at the little car park next to the skate park. There was no need for us to have gotten up so early as it was pretty much empty. We were the first car in the car park!
It was spotting with rain so we sat under a big oak tree. We did take umbrellas and alas – so had everyone else that turned up later. You can see through gaps in people – but you can’t see through umbrellas.
It was started at about 8:30am and our runner was a woman who we don’t know who then passed it on to another woman who we don’t know. All over in a minute or 5. It was raining very heavily by that time. All a bit of an anti-climax really!
Glad we went, but the whole event was very forgettable I’m afraid.

Watched remotely via the handy Olympic Torch Relay web cam on the computer (promoted on South Today at the end of each bulletin) ... marvellous ... saw all the 'kissing' handovers to the folk we knew of between torches and all from the comfort of our home filmed via the Olympic media bus I presume. Not the same atmosphere I expect as actually being there but at least we had a clear, dry view!
Good luck everyone!

We went along to the Rogate one as we know Dom well, and although we too were there earlier than we needed to be, the local shop was selling tea, coffee and bacon rolls at a good price. It soon started filling up and the atmosphere was brilliant. The children from Rogate school all came out with their handmade torches and looked very cute and were very well behaved.
When we saw Dom he looked thrilled to have the honour and to see so many people there to support him.
Yes, it was over quickly but it was far from forgettable, we had a lovely time and it was heartwarming seeing Dom so happy.
Well done all for welcoming the flame to our area so warmly!
