Hosepipe ban lifted
- Editor (9th Jul 2012 - 07:21:54)

South East Water has announced it is lifting its temporary use ban restricting the use of hosepipes with immediate effect.

The Company is heavily dependent on groundwater supplies which provide 75 per cent of its water. These were at record low levels following the two-year drought but rainfall since April means the underground aquifers are now recovering.

Paul Seeley, South East Water’s Asset Director, said: “We are pleased to be able to lift the restrictions and return to a normal service for customers. We would like to thank them for their support while they have been in place; their efforts have helped to keep demand for water well below levels normally experienced at this time of year

Good news. I think it's worth pointing out that the past two winters have been drier than normal but to call it a draught is extremely misleading but is something that suits the water companies. South East Water need to do more to retain the significant water supplies that we do have.

My wife comes from a country that is regularly hit by 'drought' - and it involves crop failure on a country level, herds of animals perishing, people dying and mass emigration and significant economic impact over many years.

As didn't see any Masai standing in dust-bowls in Liphook since the ;'drought' began I have constantly wondered how SE Water got away with their behaviour!

Check out how many litres of water are lost from pipelines before it reaches your tap (or more accuratetly, your water meter). You wouldn't think twice about using a hose for light domestic purposes once you see the values!

BBQ summer - I don't think so!
