Hosepipe Ban
- Andy (4th Jul 2012 - 08:54:14)

How can we possibly still have a hosepipe ban from South East Water in place? Questions need to be asked, even if the underground aquifers are still not full the question of whether this is the correct way to supply our water needs to be asked. It's gone suspiciously quiet in the press, I understand South East Water sold off many of their reservoirs to concentrate on underground water sources - if this is true then it's clearly the wrong decision. Frankly, given the amount of rain we have had since the beginning of May this is clearly not acceptable.

They also plan to build all these new house in Bordon, more water needed .If there is not enough water now , even after all this rain, how do they plan to supply them. I imagine they are hoping for some very wet summers to come. Lots to look forward to then!!

I think it was disgraceful that such a vital utility like water, was privatised in the first place!!

Since it's impossible to switch one's water supplier South East Water have got us by the s & cs and I don't suppose there's anything we can do about it, except move house...very annoying.

When water companies sell off their reservoirs, it is often with a proviso that they can still extract water. They sell them to companies who use them for sailing/watersports etc. They aren't concreted over. What it means is that the water companies do not have to bear the brunt of the cost of maintaining the reservoir, which falls to someone else, but can extract water when needed. So don't be fooled by the press whipping stories up about reservoirs being sold. It often makes little difference to your water supply.

Where exactly would you like more reservoirs to be built in the overpopulated southeast?

Please stop whinging about water! We are so lucky in this country to have clean, (normally) readily available water to do what we like with, at a very small cost compared with what people spend on things like Sky TV and other luxuries. You don't know how lucky you are! Has the hosepipe ban really been a hardship?

@Helen - I suspect you're on a wind up but incase you're not, this is England we live in in the year 2012 and not the Sahara Desert. As much as South East Water would like people to believe, this is not a draught under any sensible method of measurement. There is an inordinate amount of precipitation in this country, however the Water Companies are too inefficient and too greedy to manage this properly so we are not able to keep hold of a fraction of it. The fact that it is not a huge hardship for us is entirely irrelevant. This systematic mismanagement of resources, and the ENORMOUS amount of wastage is entirely unacceptable. No reason to make excuses for the Water Companies unless you have a vested interest...

Andy

How could I possibly have a vested interest? I'm not a shareholder. I am not a wind up merchant, I just have common sense and don't jump on my high horse every time something goes a little bit wrong or slightly difficult. For heavens sake, I can still turn on my tap and drink and have a shower and wash my clothes. I really don't care if my car needs a wash or my decking needs powerwashing!

Until the last six weeks we had well below average rainfall for the last two years. We have had a basic hosepipe ban to rebalance this - not standpipes in the streets or rationing at different times of day - just a request not to use a hosepipe. How awful!!!!

There hasn't been enough rain. That's the problem. The water that was stored has lasted for two years, for a large population, but is now running low. Exactly how many years worth of water do you expect them to store?

@Helen. You have an interesting point of view and you may well not be bothered about being unable to use a hose, however you\'re missing the bigger picture here. The water companies in general are incredibly inefficient with the way they manage the huge amount of water that is available in this country. We have had what can only be described as a couple of \"drier\" years recently but there has still been significant rainfall in that period. It\'s laughable to describe the situation as a draught, it\'s simply that there has not been enough rain to cover up the inefficiences of the Water Companies and how much water they lose / waste is being exposed accordingly. You don\'t need a lot of common sense to be horrified at the prospect of what would happen if we really didn\'t get much rain...Sometimes we really need people to get on their high horses to make others aware of the seriousness of issues they might otherwise believe are insignificant.

Anybody feeling sorry for the water companies might like to read this article from the Telegraph regarding leakage:

www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/...

Regarding South East Water the article says:

"Ofwat figures show that in 2010-2011 they lost 95 million litres of water in leaks PER DAY"

I wonder why the 95million leaking litres don't top up underground levels.
