Skate Park
- luke cave (11th Aug 2006 - 16:24:32)

I and the skatebaorders of liphook urge you to raise money for a better skatepark. I think I speak for everyone when I say quite frankly the heap of metal you call a skatepark is undoubtably ****! You lot keep conplaning that we are bothering the people of Liphook and you expect us to skate on that **** skatepark. Its made of steel for **** sake can you please let the skatepark be designed by skateboaders for skateboaders. You could also prevent vandalism by making it indoors and using CCTV cameras or having daily checks.

please all it takes is a bit of effort
local citicen Luke Cave

thankyou

Luke,

The eloquence of your letter just about sums up the impression the youth of Liphook portray to a vast majority around the village.
Although I have in the past stood up for and been involved in activities for the youngsters around Liphook feel that in your case going by your letter on here you my friend are on a lost cause straight away.
I would suggest for your future reference when appealing for funding and assistance you might like to refrain from the frustrated teenager tantrum who has just learnt some swear words at school.
No doubt your cv when you join the real world will demand some f****er gives you a f****in job!

I see since my posting the words have now been edited, how come this was not done prior?

Swear words were just missed when approving a few posts.

The odd swear word is permitted, afterall it's an expression of feeling, but this post was a bit OTT so after consideration I've removed all swear words.

Do you forgive the editorial team Steve? :)

Cheers

Luke,

Why don't you and the other stakeboarders raise the money yourselves, and then approach the council with a proposal if you're not happy with what is there now?

You could start saving up your pocket money, fund raise, or even ask your parents to donate towards it .... surely you don't expect everyone else to pay for it ?

Andrew.

Actually, I have a lot of sympathy with Luke - and his appraisal of the skate park is pretty much correct.

Although several Councillors and Youth workers got involved in consulting the younger people who wanted the skate park originally, the tender was awarded to a company who did not speak to the future users.

The Parish Council must take responsibility for this breakdown in communication.

So, even though many thousands of pounds were spent - some of it donated by people in the village - the eventual skate park was not of good design for the users.

Luke's point about steel being used is particularly relevent. Also, the run-off areas are too narrow and potentially accident-encouraging.

BUT, given the amount of local opposition by individuals and groups in the village, it was a fair miracle it was ever built!

That said, I'd suggest that Luke and his fellow skaters get together and write to the Parish Council, or make an appointment and pop in to see the Clerk, and also ask their parents to contact Councillors (complete list is on this website or at the Parish office) and discuss how the skate park, after some years of use and experience, could be improved.

But do lay off the F word, Luke.

Re: Skate Park
- Steve Read (12th Aug 2006 - 15:14:14)

Freddie,

Understand your sentiments regarding the existing skate park. I for one was all in favour at the time for the skate park to be built and give the local youth who wished to use the facility somewhere to go.
The age old problems will always be the same.
1) Where to site the facility bearing in mind the problems caused behind the library.
2) Overcoming local opposition regarding anything involving the youth.

You only have to read some issues on here regarding how some people get wound up over a board outside Sainsburys or come to think of it ANYTHING involving Sainsburys. (Did they get the blame for Skateboarders using their car park)?

If Luke and his fellow boarders can get together with the Parish and agree what they want ie Design, Materials & Layout, before jumping straight in with a tender from specialist companies why not approach local business to see what can be either donated or supplied at cost ie: materials & skills. I made this offer first time around and heard nothing. This offer still stands, but I can't help feeling this project will open up into another outpouring of anti youth sentiment.

My initial reply to Luke had nothing to do with the language used we use good old Anglo Saxon everyday. I just felt he could have made more friends for himself with a better posting on a subject which I'am sure will cause substantial debate by all parties involved.

Maybe they should open a swear box that would raise some money !!!!!

Re: Skate Park
- andrew ellis (13th Aug 2006 - 11:00:39)

luke i was a member of the parish council when the skate park was opened and had a hand in getting it opened. The ramp was the style that was required at the time and was the result of many meetings with people your age . They came to many meetings with me and other council members and put up a good case for even having a skate park at all . there were many against it but they had the guts and determination to get the park . Get off yor bum get together a plan of action and go to the council with that plan .

Re: Skate Park
- andrew ellis (13th Aug 2006 - 11:09:25)

Freddie and Luke one of the reasons the skate rame was built of metal was the service costs if other materials were used . we had several companies tender and after taking advice , chose the one we thought best (not the cheapest) . Wood was concidered but the costs of the upkeep would have been far to high and some of those little angles would have set fire to it .

Re: Skate Park
- Freddie Dawkins (14th Aug 2006 - 00:21:04)

Hi, Andy -

Yep, remember attending a couple of the meetings, long before I got involved as a Councillor.

The young people who came along to the meetings put their case well and I know that you had a large part in getting the park built - over a lot of local opposition.

I think now would be a good time to review the skate park, its use, and how it could be improved/updated.

Steve - can't agree with you more. Les Futcher is now chairing the Recreation Committee of the PC, so I'll forward these mesages to Les and ask him if it's possible to move things forward.

Luke, well done on taking the fists steps to make change. Your tone was a little strong but I understand that.

Good luck and take some of the sensible advice that others have posted and you might get lucky.

The ones that put you down are not worth worrying about so dont get angry and stay focused on your objectives, change will happen.

How about trying some fiund raising yourself with the ramp you have perhapes a local school skate competion, the residents will all be involved and you can show a genuine cause for improving the park if the competion is a success.

GOOD LUCK.

- Harry Hatfield (2nd Aug 2011 - 19:18:12)

Hi i agree with what some people are saying but it does need upgrading, if it was and indoor skate park with wooden flooring and a good surface, and plenty of ramps it would be wicked even if you have to pay a couple of quid for the day to get the money back for what was spent on it and to also stop vandalism, to be fair if you were a vandal and went out to damage something you wouldn\'t pay money to do it.
thanks
Harry

To be honest the baset ball court next the skate park is never used anymore let alone have any suface to bounce a ball on so they could make the skate park we have now a huge one and insted of metal or wood make it out of pre-cast concrete, then that way people can use bikes, boards, scooters and what ever else.

Hi Luke,

You know me and I you. Were you not with Tom when the last attempt was made with the help of the authorities to make it better. If not call him to find out what happened.

Nobody really owes you a new skatepark and I know you skateboarders have a rough idea of the costs. You feel strongly and from this thread you can see there is some support. Get together with the rest of the lads and come up with a solution. Show the community that you are capable of making things happen. There are several folk out there including me that would help, if you felt you needed it.

Forget the asterisks. At least you put your name to your post. Good man.

Simon

This thread was started 5 years ago by Luke, he has probably stopped skateboarding now.

Dear Ed,

Yup Thanks. That'll teach me to read things more carefully.

He hasnt stopped skating. Nor have the others who tried hard to do their bit for Yoof and the community.

They just go much further afield to find skateparks that meet their high expectations. They film themselves and post online; and excellent they are. Not yobs, not uneducated, not graffiti artists,
but great kids. Fit, sociable, responsible.

....oh and yes many attended the famous field party; and are still sociable and responsible.

I'm proud of 'em.

Simon
