Headley Road Crossing
- Huw (10th Aug 2006 - 16:03:20)

It's good to see that they have started the proposed crossing on Headley Road NOT !
I notice a planning application has appeared dated 4th August with a note adding that no work will comence for at least 3 months from the application date, what is wrong with the council surely it is easier to undertake this work whilst the traffic levels are considerabley less during the holiday period as promised. Or are they waiting for the inevitable accident as people roar their way to work along the Headley road usually on their mobile phone !!
Common sense please !!

Huw -

I well understand your frustration. Since we lost the crossing patrol - most be almost three years now - we have been promised a pedestrian crossing.

Hampshire County Council finally agreed, after lobbying by the Parish Council and in particular Sam James (who is now a County Councillor), to fund the crossing.

The delay was originally due to budget limits, then lack of personnel in the Highways dept.

It's a poor show but at least we will have the crossing working this year.

Can I just remind everyone that, after the last "lollipop" patrol left, HCC did try hard to get a replacement. But with the low pay and all the checks that are now required, no-one decided to follow through on their original applications for the job. It's a common problem throughout Hampshire and much of the country.

Also, some of the "Mums" volunteered to work the flashing crossing lights and did a great job for quite a while.

I would say that a lot of the problems are caused by parents insisting on driving kids to school and blocking The Avenue; insisting on doing right turns out of The Avenue; and not giving way to other parents and children trying to coss Headley Road at school times.

A bit more consideration would not go amiss.

Thanks Freddie,

As parents that walk their kids to school the crossing can't come soon enough most mornings you take your life in your hands crossing Headley Road.

It is a shame that parents who live in close proximity to the school feel the need to drive maybe this accounts for the increase in obesity in the country that and people being too damn lazy!

I look forward to the crossing happening and something to encourage the drivers to slow down maybe the speed limt should be reduced to 20mph from the Catholic church !!
