Bit of gardening advice needed
- liz (28th Jun 2012 - 15:00:07)
My other half, who is not the most enthusiastic gardener, decided our winter jasmine was too overgrown and attacked it with clippers. However I think the jasmine must have been holding up the trellis - which was holding up a very pretty and well established climbing rose. Unfortunately the trellis fell over taking the rose with it and snapped the rose about three feet from the ground. At this point it is just a thick single stem. Any chance it will recover? I know roses don't mind being pruned back quite hard, but I think this may be a step too far!

Not being an expert rose gardener, but every year I end up cutting at least one too far back. My opinion is give it time. The last one I cut right back, recovered and has been fine ever since. Maybe nothing this year, but hopefully next!

Last year our trellis came down taking our climbing rose with it. It was quite damaged, so we pruned it till it was just over a foot high. It looked pathetic! I didn't think it would come back. Anyway it went berserk, with lovely new growth and is fine. Leave yours and give it a chance, you may be surprised.

Thanks for both replies - very encouraging. I'll just leave it and see what happens...

Healthy roses in a suitable position will grow back after being cut to ground level, even if the bark looks old. In that case I would cut it to just a few centimetres above the ground to encourage healthier and more numerous new replacement main shoots.
Leaving a stick/snag of a broken main trunk is horticulturally inadvisable, not to mention unattractive.
And remember, large climbing roses need robust support.
Please ask me should you require any further horticultural advise from Dewy's Gardening Services, email: da_rl@hotmail.com

I have cut what is left of my rose back as suggested by Dewy's Garden Services and have to say that this lower part of the stem seems much healthier than higher up. So many thanks and fingers crossed!

Thanks for the advice without which I would probably have given up on my rose. Strong new shoots have appeared!
