LiDBA Bike Ride
- Bernard Bayly LiDBA Chairman (1st Jun 2012 - 14:39:32)

Following the concern expressed in Talkback regarding the condition of the roads in the Liphook area and subsequent to our members ride last weekend, LiDBA has reviewed the route and concluded that it is safe for the Ride to take place, Obviously there is the overriding proviso that due care and attention should be given by all entrants to prevailing road conditions.

We hope that you will enter and enjoy the Ride as in previous years and look forward to seeing you on the 10th.

Please don't forget to bring your helmet!

I appreciate LiDBA's standpoint on this issue, but I will travel the route on the day before to see for myself, and then make a decision based upon what my eyes tell me.. What one man feels is fine may not be the same for others.

Is the £25 pay on day apply to the childrens race as well?

My 7 year old daughter who has just learnt to ride her bike now wants to do the race too.

I think that £25 for Children on the day seems a bit steep is there a reduced rate for children?

Junior ride remains at £1 for on the day entry. The 2012 entry form can be downloaded as a PDF file by clicking here

Thank you Hants CC

I so hope your weather forecast is the correct one Editor... cos the one I use is saying heavy rain! And am so hoping the wind will drop unless it's pushing us along of course...

Current prediction is 13 to 15C, 10mph wind speed and light rain. See link above and in left menu

@Richard - I cycled the route this morning. Quick summary if you are interested:

1. Resurfaced roads out of Liphook not too bad - some ripples but fine (I was on a road bike with tubs)
2. Old A3 South - tree debris on the edges
3. Rake - grit and gravel on road, surface worse than the Liphook resurfacing works
4. A272 - farm muck washed into roads at points
5. Rogate - got caught behind Line Patnting truck, roads are a little gritty but fine
6. Borden Wood Hill - muck in the shaded section, proably the worst bit on the route
7. Elmers Marsh - poorly resurfaced road

Everything else fine. Roads are okay, have cycled far worse.

Weather likely to be the problem!

Happy riding folks.

Thanks for your update Phil. I drove the course today. The road out of Liphook concerns me if it is very wet, and there is a new pot hole on Hillbrow that brought down a cyclist this morning (I hope he is OK, but he was when the ambulance arrived - just cuts and bruises). The rest of the course is really just storm and normal debris. It looks like the road (barring the odd potholes around the Milland-Fernhurst section is in the best state for years.

I plan on riding unless the weather turns foul, as I am concerned for the first half mile or so, but apart from that, looks OK

Good luck to all the riders. Let's hope the weather stays like it is at the moment. Overcast but dry.

Re: LiDBA Bike Ride
- Philip Jordan (11th Jun 2012 - 18:01:06)

Rider numbers were well down on last year. There were 875 riders on the road compared with 1136 in 2011. Junior ride numbers at 101 were also down; 2011 was 170.

The money raised by the ride will not be know until September when riders have collected their sponsorship money to add to the money raised through sponsorship from Local business and the ride draw.

Reduced numbers are thought to reflect the delay in half term due to the Jubilee celebrations, the poor weather last year and possibly for a few the “no helmet no ride” rule.

The first riders back were Tom Ilett for the men, in just over the hour and Lucy Johnson for the ladies, some eight minutes later.

Although numbers were down the feedback from riders was all positive. The route had been in good condition, motorists were generous with their patience and the general camaraderie amongst riders excellent.

And of course the weather although overcast was great for a ride in the country, even giving the very occasional cooling light sprinkling of rain.

There were 18 stalls at Bohunt seeking to add to their funds and in the main did well.

LiDBA wishes to thank all those who helped during the ride. The police, marshals on the route, the Liphook Guides at the refreshment stops, St John Ambulance, Petersfield ATC, Owens Cycles, Bohunt School, providers of prizes for the draw and the LiDBA members wives.
