Freeview Digital TV in Liphook
- Andy Woodage (11th Sep 2003 - 11:28:00)

Any request to the Freeview website for a check on availability at Liphook will result in a message telling you that it is not available.
I have just installed a Freeview Box on my standard aerial and can confirm that it works perfectly. Obviously this may not be the same for every location in the village but I suggest that you give it a try if you are interested in this service .

I get Freeview BBC fine but ITV is useless and Ch5 non existant. I may invest in a wideband high gain aerial to replace my loft aerial but will it be worth it?
Those who get Freeview fine, is it from Midhurst or Hannington?

My Freeview comes from Hannington if you are having difficulty I suggest you go into the setup menu on the Box and complete a download which should bring the missing channels in.

Andy - thanks for that.

Thats amazing news - not least as it happens i work as an interactive tv programmer and have needed freeview for ages ;) Never bothered to play with it here because as you said, the freeview site doesn't list Liphook as an area that can receive a digital signal.

Can you elaborate a little more - what box did you install, what type of aerial do you have? Are you able to receive interactive services? What kinds of problems have you experienced? Are you sure you are not receiving the analogue signal (Freeview Canal+ boxes are set to tune into analogue should no DVB/digital signal be present)...?

Re: Freeview Digital TV in Liphook

The box is a Thompson DT1000 which is a standard offering from the High St. I can assure you it is not reverting to analogue all the available channels are working and the signal strength and quality are showing green ie: acceptable. My aerial is just a standard one for Hannington but does have a booster amp fitted mainly because I distribute the signal to different rooms.

Well i did a little checking (at work and at home), and it turns out that all 3 our local transmitters (Midhurst, Hannington & Isle Of Wight) are now equipped for DTT. I had assumed previously that it could only be received from the Hannington site, and that an aerial would need to be positioned accordingly.

I have an aerial fitter arriving on Thursday to check it out, so i will update this thread as i go along. He has mentioned that in some cases a wide-band aerial is needed (the ones with the large back panels) and cabling needs to be checked as digital signals are very sensitive to wire noise.

Apparently in the majority of Liphook cases the problem is that you can only get limited reception for digital channels (i.e. some, but not all). One house can get it fine, and the next-door neighbour can't. However in theory, all Liphook residents should now be able to receive all 50+ freeview channels, even if an amplifier is needed.

Useful UK Tranmission info:

And i thought coding it was hard enough ;)

My new Unix 52 Wide band aerial is now installed in the loft and pointing at Hannington.

Digital reception for all channels is fine.

I hope this information helps.

I'm grinning like a cheshire cat as the aerial guy came round and we can receive all channels perfectly.

Took a while to scan and apparently the problems tend to occur with the ITV multiplex (UK is separated into Mux A,B,C & D). We have a booster on the main aerial so no replacement was needed.

Whoopie doo! Now at least i can see what i'm actually working on....!

This is all excellent news! We have been waiting for Freeview for a while but have been put off by the "official" word about reception in Liphook. We already have an aerial booster but of course we don't know anyone in Liphook who has Freeview (because everyone out there thinks it doesn't work!). Is there anyone there who has Freeview and could lend us a box just to check reception? Tel no here is 725181. Eternal gratitude guaranteed!

Yesterday I installed a FERGUSON FDT500 Digital Receiver (£59.99) from Curry's and it works fine. I now get 50+ channels (far too many of which are shopping channels. Who buys all that rubbish?)

The box comes with it's own scart lead but you need to buy a length of ariel lead to go from the box to the T.V (£7.99 or £3.50 if you get the Security and Electrical store in the Square to make one up for you.)

Note for Nick and Tracy Hancock. Curry's said that in view of the ambiguous instructions relating to the Liphook area they would be happy to take it back if I found that it did not work.

One rider to add. I first tried to connect it to a television that was about eight years old and although it accepted the signal all the channels were in black and white including the tuning screen. But it works perfectly on a newer set probably because the older set was not programmed to accept a digital signal.

Thanks Paul, very helpful and we'll get on to Curry's. Just to save us time ringing round, which branch sold you your box?

Message for Nick Hancock.

The branch of Currys that I used was at Woodbridge Road, Guildford and they had lots.

Brilliant night on BBC3 last night!

Desperate to keep up with the Robinsons, we too bought a Ferguson box from Curry's in Petersfield. We can now get lots of channels but not the ITV ones. We'll be getting an aerial man in to sort out the details soon. But, overall, we're very pleased (though my wife says four channels are more than enough already).

Re: Freeview Digital TV in Liphook

Rob,
No ITV, you will probably need a Unix 52 wideband aerial. Your aerial man will probably quote £70 plus about £50 installation. However, you could probably get one for about £30 if you were prepared to do the install yourself. If your current aerial is inside, it almost certainly needs to go on the roof. Good reception can be demonstrated with a loft aerial but there will be days when the signal is weaker and you lose it.
Loss of signal strength with digital is much more disruptive than with analog - with analog, quality deteriorates; with digital - you lose a block of sound and vision (usually just as they anounce something important like the answer to the million pound question on WWTBAM).
Mike.

Almost forgot,

Dixons are offering a :

GRUNDIG
GDT1500
Freeview Digital Receiver
Dixons Price £49.99

Available via www.dixons.co.uk

I have no idea how good the box is but thought the information might be useful.

Re: Freeview Digital TV in Liphook

Thanks to all for the information - we are now the proud owners of a Ferguson digibox which works a treat on all channels - the only thing it doesn't supply is the time with which to watch it!

We bought it at Currys in Guildford. The Petersfield shop - having initially said by phone that they would take it back if it didn't work - would not confirm that when we went in to buy it.
