Hampshire Premier League Match Report
Liphook United 4
Colden Common 0
LIPHOOK United delivered a focused display to secure title success on home soil with a convincing victory over Colden Common tonight (Tuesday April 24).
The defending champions earned all three points from an energetic encounter at the Recreation Ground to clinch the Hampshire Premier League crown once more.
United struggled to adapt to the pace of play during a frantic first half, as striker Liam Magee proved a constant threat on the counter-attack and John Cole fired wastefully wide.
Liphook battled back to create a host of clear-cut chances, as Nick Cope nodded narrowly wide at the near post before Paul Marshall prompted a smart save with a glancing header.
Colden carved out several shooting opportunities before the break, with a looping lob from Callum Magee landing inches over the bar.
United broke the deadlock on the stroke of half time, Dan Harding seizing on a sweeping cross to provide a cushioned pass for Steve Harding to fire home from five yards out.
Liphook proved bright and bold during the second half and doubled their advantage on the hour, Adrian Moger producing a powerful header from an acute angle inside the box.
United sealed victory with 15 minutes remaining, Marshall pouncing on a pinpoint pass from Harding to deliver a deft strike from six yards out.
Liphook netted another to complete a composed display during the dying moments, as Craig Read provided a sweeping cross for Harding to hit the target with an assured strike.
"We were perhaps overcome by the occasion early on and struggled to get to grips with the game," said Liphook manager Kevin Adair.
"However, the second half performance was much-improved, as we showed greater confidence and composure on the ball to make sure of both the points and the title."
Liphook United line-up: Ewen, Read, D Harding (Pierson), Luckhurst C, Adair, Burrows, McGrath (Moger), Cope (Farrow), Marshall, S Harding, Green. | |
