Discarded bottles.
- Gordon West (24th Apr 2012 - 14:36:10)

A GOLD FOR THE YOUNG PEOPLE OF LIPHOOK

I walked round Radford Park this morning. Along the river path and back over the open area of grassland. As I approached the carpark there appeared to be something on top of the litter bin.

The dog and I went to look. A cardboard box filled with empty beer bottles rested on top of the bin.

I filled a plastic bag with about a dozen bottles to take them to the bottle banks at Sainsbury\'s because I did not know when the bin would be emptied and if they went to the bottle banks I knew they would be recycled.

I called into the Parish Office and explained the bag of bottles and suggested bottle banks should be placed in strategic places.

The Assistant Parish Clerk told me that in some countries on the Continent, Belgium and Germany if I remember, you were refunded a small amount of money for returning the empty bottles. That sounds like the Thirties and Forties in this country.

She agreed to pass the information on and we will see if the Parish Council act on it.

Many thanks to whoever picked the bottles up.

That is a very very large assumption to make that this must be young people! If you believe press reports recently the biggest problem drinkers are those in their 40s .....I was just about to say 'of which I am one' but I meant in my 40s and not problem drinker (although some may dispute that!!)

Well done Gordon. Yet another example of a dog walker clearing up human waste!

This post is fantastic.

Not everyone in the village is a drunken dog mess spreader and here is the proof!

Firstly the bottle users cleared up for themselves initially and secondly they were completely tidied away by another good samaritan.

If there were more responsible community spirited people around like this we wouldn't need ASBO's at all.

Hats off to all concerned.

Jane G when you are my age anyone under 50 is a young person.

J W thank you, there are to my knowledge several people, who pick up litter whenever they see it.

Thank you Dawn, your comments are what we should be aiming for.

I do not think the Parish council should pay people to return empties there! perhaps the bottle bank near Sainsbury might consider this I do not think the Parish Office is the place to return empties!

Dawn. How do you know it was the drinkers who cleared up initially?
