Seabeach Ltd - Scam
- Sue (7th Jun 2006 - 11:34:56)

To all those who received a leaflet through their letterbox today from a company called Seabeach Limited, purporting to be a collection company who provide people in third world countries with clothes, etc., I decided to check them out on the internet and came across this site:- http://www.northlancing.com/Comments/Comments%20page.htm
Suggest you check it out too before handing over any clothes or other goods. A company called Orellana Limited also seem to be running the same scam.

Sue

Thanks Sue, always thought these leaflets were a bit suspect, that's why I always chuck them in the recycle bin. I always drop off my unused clothes and other items at the animal charity shop at Waterlooville.

Thanks for the alerts- We should be more aware of thse things-telephone scams like this annoy me. I had a recorded message telling me I had a parcel waiting and to call back an 0898 number. I realised it was a scam as it was a prerecorded message but an elderly person would not be as "Streetwise". I have now registered withe the telephone preference service www.tpsonline.org.uk hopefully marketing will diminish. Another call yesterday that I had won a kitchen- obviously nonsense! Are telemarketers that desperate to make sales in such an underhand way! I should update and get a phone which shows who is calling I suppose! Another "ploy" is for you to buy something from a shop or pub or restaurant, pay for it, by card, and then fake cards are copied from your details, this has happened to me. Identity fraud has happened to my brother, so shred all personal details before they go in the re-cycling bin!

Ah, so I'm not the only one who's had credit cards cloned. I've had two cards cloned at garages in the London area on different occasions, the first time they tried to buy an expensive DVD from ARGOS but got rummbled by an observant cashier, a few months later with a different card they actually bought something, again from ARGOS. When I rang the card company, MBNA, to tell them of the item shown on my statement, a really sarcastic and cocky operator all but accused me of trying to pull a "fast one", needless to say I cancelled the card and vowed never to use them again, even though I still get bombarded with application letters.

I think that with technology has also come fraud of a sophistication elderly people cannot always understand. My mother in law now deceased, was a very well brought up lady, and every time she recieved a marketing letter addressed to her by name she would write a very spidery reply! I could not make her understand that her reply even refusing the credit card would mean she would get sent two more letters! There are also a lot of scams aimed at business, the favourite is fake invoices, I have seen some of them and they look perfectly innocent. In a large company often the accounts dept does not check all the suppliers and goods recieved, etc. A worrying one is those now which purport to be from the government and say under this legislation etc you must have this licence etc, and the firms are not telling the truth. It takes too much time to check everything!

I live in Weybridge in Surrey and the Seabeach flyers were distributed down our road on Monday, with a promise of collection on Wednesday. When nobody collected the bag that I had spent ages putting together, and which contained alot of good quality women's and children's clothes, I thought I would check it out on the internet. It was great to find this site, as well as a few others which confirmed my suspicions. I put a note through the doors of my neighbours, who had bags outside their doors. I am pleased to say they have all been taken in!!

I live in Saxmundham, Suffolk and have just received one of there flyers how can we complain?

This has now been mentioned on BBC Breakfast TV bbc.co.uk/... It gives details of who you can contact to ensure that the collecting company is legitimate.

It doesn't look like a scam to me. They don't claim to be a charity, just a distribution company. I don't see the problem.

It is law now that all companies claiming they supply clothing or other products to third world countries by means of charity have to be registered.

They also have to display their registration number on all flyers and leafletts.

These numbers can be checked on the charity web-site.

if they do not display a registered number then they are more than likely on a scam and collecting the items to sell themselves and pocket the profit

Thanks,

I got one of these leaflets through the door on Thursday and almost put stuff out for the next day but fortunately didnt have time. I thought I should check them out on the net just incase they were bogus, having not heard of them before. Good job I did. You've been a great help providing that info and I really appreciate it.

I have had a leaflet through my door today - After watching the Real Hustlers on BBC3 this week, who detailed how these people collect your belongings claiming to be a charity and they actually sort these items and sell them..... what may I ask you do 3rd World Countries do with mobile phones, DVD and CDs!? (it has said on the leaflet that these would be of great help)... yeah right - a great help to line their pockets. I have a good mind to leave a bin bag of rubbish for them to collect! DONT LEAVE THEM ANYTHING - THEY ARENT GENUINE!

These shisters just dropped some leaflets at Sherfield Park a new and growing housing estate on the Reading Road near Basingstoke/Chineham areas. Be warned Seabeach are totally bogus. a quick check on the companies house website shows they have NEVER filed accounts (a criminal act) and are about to be struck off by the registrar. They are based in Essex, but obviously word has spread and they are travelling further from home. They have been pulling this scam for years. Give to registered charities instead people. Registered charities never have the word Ltd after their name! As the other lady said what is some poor starving kid going to do with a pile of DVD's! Anyway, warn your neighbors particularly the older or less streetwise ones.

It's not correct that registered charities cannot also be limited liabilty companies...

Your readers may be interested to hear that seabeach ltd are now operating in Ireland. They have joined the large amount of such scam merchants who are proliferating like rabbits in a warren. Only last week I had a different leaflet each day purporting to be charity collectors. I checked company charity numbers given and they were all bogus. If you have surplus clothing there are plenty of genuine charity shops who will be delighted to recieve your goods. One of the major genuine charities who operate here had to stop issuing bags and making collections as bogus companies were tracking them and going out before them on their rounds and stealing their bags. The same company who had large collectig bins placed in supermarket car parks for depositing bags had to have the design of their bins changed as some groups were lowering small children into the bins and they would hand out the bags. Be warned.
