Best Sat Nav ?

Need to change our sat nag - she has a croaky, sore throat after many years of use in finding various football pitches out the back of beyond. Also no facility to update her maps which gives her a hissy fit when she thinks we are going off-road.
Has anyone bought a sat nav recently that they can recommend? I've been reading reviews on the web and getting more confused by the day!
Just need for UK, like the sound of the live traffic updates (but don't want to have to pay £50 pa for it), and ability to update maps.
Any suggestions (apart from AA 2012 map book which may be cheaper but isn't easy to follow whilst driving!)?
