Re surfaced roads
- Dusty (14th Apr 2012 - 07:57:33)
While its is nice to seenour roads repair and they now resemble rally tracks in wales There Is now need to drive like you are in a rally
Drivers are treating our roads around the village as a race track it is worse than ever without markings
Walking along the road you get sprayed with dust and chipping
Some drivers behaviour is appalling
Number Plates are being noted and reported to the police for careless driving

Hi Dusty
We agree with your comments fully. Our cars and house are covered in dust due to the speeding of traffic along the Portsmouth Road, despite the signs stating 10 miles an hour.
We have witnessed one car in particular over the past two days speeding and wheel spinning in both directions past our house, we have reported this car to the police as we noted the number plate.
The police have advised if they receive repeated reports of certain cars driving in this manner, they will send the traffic police to visit the driver at home.
Therefore anyone reading this who witnesses bad driving please report it via the 101 number.
I have also emailed Hampshire county council re the volume of dust and the lack of road sweeping.
The dust caused by the roadworks has covered our cars and house inside and out. Wouldn't it be nice to get the hosepipe out to clean them, but no doubt I would get caught and the offending drivers would escape scott free.

Had the same problems along the stretch between the Rec and Radford Park today - drivers totally oblivious to the flying dust and chippings affecting pedestrians (even small children). Usual selfish behaviour.
Will try and note the car numbers if they slow down enough but it will be my word against theirs won't it, so nothing will be done.

Perhaps someone, who lives down London Road, could report to Hampshire CC that due to the loose gravel that damage was being caused to property, as I suspect the small stones are chipping the paintwork of cars parked nearby. Alternatively I believe our local councillor for Hampshire visits this forum, perhaps he can ask for the road to be swept pronto. As an aside, the road in its current state may be too dangerous for bicycles or motorcycles and I believe that councils have previously had to pay out to motorcyclists who have crashed due to unswept roads after resurfacing

Last year my wife crashed on her bike due to gravelled roads (5 hours of surgery worth of damage).
We subsequently discovered that the road contractors are entitled to leave these surfaces and are not obliged to sweep them (proven legally) during the resurfacing work.
I would have thought using a hose to wash away dust from property and cars would come under the bans allowances for essential safety reasons perhaps?
Hope this gets resolved to everyone satisfaction.

I stand corrected. I thought I had seen cases to the contrary. Perhaps our local councillor can prevail upon the County Council to get it swept. It does seem odd that a contractor can legally leave a potential hazard on a road surface and not be liable for it...

I have just made a formal complaint by 'phone to Hants County
Council Highways about this disgraceful shambles on the road.
(tel: 0845 603 5633) I was told that I will be contacted by a senior
engineer.
Suggest others do the same.
SOON !!!

Good luck Nick, I am still awaiting a reply to my email sent on Friday last week.

What\'s the point in it anyway? Just pouring a load of gravel and dust does not equate to resurfacing or repairing a road properly, except in our council\'s tick box mentality. Job done. End of year report says we\'ve resurfaced x number of roads so pay up your council tax.

Just come home this afternoon down London Road and notice an awful lot of the "Chippings" are missing from the road with only "Tar" showing.
So good to see that Hampshire CC has yet again employed a quality company to carry out a quality job (as per Midhurst Road last year)........ or will they blame speeding motorist or the wrong sort of rain!!!
