Parking
- susie (14th Mar 2012 - 21:32:40)

I have been quietly seething over the last few weeks about parking in dangerous places around Liphook but today I've had enough.
The Highway code says:
Rule 243

DO NOT stop or park
-opposite or within 10 metres (32 feet) of a junction, except in an authorised parking space
-on a bend

On my way home from school I encountered 3 people who had selfishly and dangerously parked within a 1/2 car length of 2 different junctions. This meant I had to pull out into oncomng traffic when I couldn't see what was coming and, as I didn't realise one car was parked because there was a woman and 2 children it, a long queue of traffic waiting to turn into the Avenue.

It's only a matter of time before there is an accident due to this and the fact that crossing that zebra crossing can be scary at times.

I'm going out armed with my camera tomorrow!

Have you tried driving down Tower Road from Headley Road in the afternoon with all the cars parked right up to the intersection with Mommy waiting to collect little darling from school. Just a question of time before somebody smashes into a vehicle when turning into Tower Road.

- Driving Me Mad (15th Mar 2012 - 12:55:02)

I have complained to the Council about this who made it very clear (accidentally on their part I think as they said they would look into it) that nothing was likely to be done. This was some time ago and aside from completely messing up how to contact me (and no doubt breaching various data protection rules - another story) I have heard nothing.

They jumped to the conclusion that I was suggesting yellow lines be put in place which would, it appears, involve all sorts of consulation and goodenss knows what.

I suggest a sign on each side of the road saying no parking between 8:30 and 9:15 and whenever rug rat chucking out time is.

In fact, if the council are worried about the cost of of a couple of small signs, nothing need be added as the people who park there are already breaking the law. It just needs the POLICE (ha ha) to penalise a few.

It is school mothers who clog up Tower Road morning and afternoon - you should be walking anyway. Where are you coming from that requires you to drive?! If not from Liphook, maybe you shouldn't be allowed at our schools.

Not only do people park in places they shouldn't but the arrogance and ignorance of drivers who ignore obstructions on their side of the road and just come at you head on is astounding. Even when there is space to pull in on their side.

I try to avoid that area in school rush hours as it annoys me to the point where somebody might get told things they don't want to hear!

The top of Tunbridge Crescent is another extremely dangerous place for people to park - right near to the post box, making it difficult for people driving up Tunbridge Crescent to Headley Road.

Cars coming from Hill House Hill direction and turning into Tunbridge Crescent cannot see round the corner and when you have to pull out on to the other side of the road to drive round the parked cars it is, again, only a matter of time before there is a collision.

They may occasionally be mothers going to and from school but largely this is at other times of the day, particularly in the evening and I have my suspicions that the majority are visitors to people along the stretch of Headley Road between Tunbridge Crescent and the zebra crossing.

Also, let's not forget that a lot of the parking in Tower Road at the moment is due to the Co-op car park being closed - not just mothers taking children to school. Those shoppers are the ones parking close to the junctions and need to be reminded of the highway code.

So let's not be too scathing about the mothers - I am sure they have their reasons for driving their children to school and they should not be judged for that - only for the actual parking.

I do think that a few more police men walking the area and pointing out breaches of highway code to EVERYONE might remind people and make them less likely to do it again.

I just wanted to take issue with the statement about people from outside 'Liphook' not being allowed in 'our schools'!!! How exactly do you define Liphook, and where should those who live out of walking distance of the school send their children? It was a ridiculous small-minded statement to make. I live in one of the outlying villages, but my address is still Liphook (Passfield, Conford, Bramshott etc are all within Liphook) and I am still within the school catchment area - Liphook is my local school as much as someone living on the doorstep of the school. However, I live around 2.5 miles from the school and have no pavement for part of the way to walk in safely. Like many parents who live in the Liphook satellite villages, I do not park on the roads around school, but with a permit in the satellite car parks.

I think you will find that many of the people who clog the roads within Lihook are parents who live in Liphook itself, who have to get to work on time and so park nearby.

Stop making idiotic statements blaming people who live slightly out of area.

I am also one of the "mothers", to a RUGRAT,..as you so eliquently, put it!..i also live in one of the surrounding villages, with no pavement, to walk my 3 children to Liphook school, as this is our catchment area school!...i do drive, and i do park sensibly within The Avenue, or Avenue close, yes many working parents,(because it isnt only mothers, that do the school run),..park within reach of the school, because of work commitments.
Yes i agrree with you, that sometimes the parking situation is ridiculous, and some parents do park, in dangerous, and un-thoughful places!....but i dont like that fact that the end of the school day, has been referred to as "rugrat kicking out time",......un-thougtful.....i think so !
