- b (11th Mar 2012 - 18:18:02)

Does anyone know when any of these services arrived in Liphook? I am in yr 10 and need to know the establishment years of the following for my geography coursework - any responses greatly appreciated.

C.J. Hampshire
Liphook Bakery (Station Rd)
Gables
Train Station
Doctor’s Surgery
The Green Dragon

Thank you

And you have, of course, tried the Internet, or is it due in tomorrow morning for first lesson after assembly?

I think B has tried the internet, hence posting on here for some info. Its a bit harsh to imply that B has left it till the last minute. B asked a question on here probably because he/she thought the Liphook residents who frequent this site might have some knowledge. Not everything on the internet is correct, perhaps he/she thought asking locals would be more accurate. Good luck B, i think i know the eras of some but I wouldnt want to give you the wrong info, so ill leave that to the ones who know for sure!

Have you tried going into these places and asking?

I think you will find that the railway arrived in 1859. Just hope I am right to the year.
Also I remember C J Hampshire in the very early seventies but cannot be precise.

The railway station opened 1859.
CJ Hampshire opened 1976, after the previous trader retired.
The bakery is fairly recent and should be able to tell you when.
You dont say which doctor you refer to.
Gable news owners Mr and Mrs Patel have been there around 11/12 years, and should be able to give you dates.
The Green dragon is very old, even older than the Anchor. We can probably give you approx date only.
Hope this helps.

Jenny, This must be a basic geography course. How to find a place is dealt with in the GPS course on smart phone usage.

My comment was meant as a joke, as I know from experience that when I had to do homework, I used to famously leave it until Sunday evening for Monday first thing. Most people only learn planning and scheduling of work when they are older and a job forces them to do this. It was the way the question was posed made me think of my homework attempts :)

And fior the record I thought this articel was interesting:

You might want to contact the Bramshott and Liphook Preservation Society. In the early 1990s, they published several booklets on the history of Liphook, witten variously by Ian Baker and L.C. Giles, one of these was specifically about Liphook shops through the years.

The library may still have copies of these books and can give you contact details for the Society (it used to be at 12 London Rd, but I'm not sure if they're still there so best to check).

You can always pop into the Heritage Centre in the Millennium Centre and they will help you answer your questions. Our opening hours are on our website - see the link on the left. We can always make arrangements for a volunteer to meet youthere if you can't get in during normal hours.
