trying to rent
- julie (29th Feb 2012 - 14:37:24)

Is it just me or are landlords more than a bit reluctant to rent to people on benefits? My son and myself are staying with my parents after a really bad marriage break up and I'm frantically trying to find work and somewhere for us to live. Do landlords assume that because I'm not in work at the moment I'm some sort of drugged up drunk? I understand not wanting their property wrecked, I'd be exactly the same in their position but surely a person shouldn't be written off just because they can't find a job.

Hi

As a landlady who has recently let a two bedroom flat, and as someone who has had a tennant on benefits for the last five who looked after the flat brilliantly, I was overwhelmed by the number of people looking for rented accommodation in the local area.

So your predicament may not be due to the fact you are currently on benefits, simply that there is clearly a shortage of property to rent in the area and competition is fierce. The person I let to in the end offered a relative a guarantor which from a landlords perspective was reassuring.

Good luck in your search.
