Guerilla Gardening
- Uncle Ernie (27th Feb 2012 - 15:03:38)

I was reading Dawn Hoskins note under the \"coming off the A3\" item when she mentions \"guerilla gardening\".
I\'ve tried this splendid past time near where I live just off the Avenue; there\'s a footpath that winds down through the old Lowsley farm with a perfect corner plot.
Last year 2 or 3 of us planted some stuff and it really did well - until the council maintenance gang came along that is.
They promptly cut every thing down - including a miniature fir tree - then sprayed the area with weed killer.
The plot is now back to what is was before we guerilled it - a depository for little bags of dog **** that so-called dog owners can\'t be bothered to take home with them.
Hope you have better luck Dawn!

That's a shame.. i suppose I can see why the council might not like people planting little trees on verges.. health and safety maybe? somebody might trip over a little tree and sue the council? Or something like that - wouldn't be surprised! But to spray weed killer on flowers is a bit harsh!

I think the guerilla gardening idea is lovely, brighten up some of the abandonded road verges and also create some nice flowers for pollinators -

I was watching 'bees butterflies and blooms' on bbc2 this week (it's still on iplayer), and they were talking about the idea of incorporating wildflowers into town flower displays, to encourage bee and butterfly populations, it's a really interesting little series and I wonder if anyone from Liphook in Bloom saw it and maybe got some inspiration, wouldn't it be lovely to have a village full of beautiful bee and butterfly friendly flower displays!
(that is not a criticism by the way - i think everyone agrees that Liphook in Bloom do a fantastic job of making Liphook beautiful every year :D!)
