Re Amateur Boxing event today (Sunday) at Millennium Centre
- paul (12th Oct 2025  14:46:25)

Hi,

How good was the sporting contest?
Any future Boxing stars?

I'm surprised a relatively affluent area such as Liphook would be interested in boxing and wrestling. Didn't know so many Liphook folk would turn out to watch half naked sweaty men rolling around on the floor together.

It was an event for the stable ABC. It was not all sweaty men going around half naked. It was children and teenagers. Yes there were a handful of adults fighting but majority was children and it was a roaring success. Instead of putting the event down why not come and see it for yourself.

Hi,
Boxing known as the the "Noble Art". It is skills, rather than brute strength, to beat your opponent. The Queensberry rules were introduced in England in1867, to enable a fair contest.

Wrestling was a formal sport in this country from 1900's, and became a professional discipline. Also an Olympic sport, enjoyed around the world.

Both sports have massive appeal, to both men and women competing.

These activities, do not need to be performed in non-affluent areas only.

Boxing Mum, watching teenage boys wrestling would be even dodgier. But it's nice to know the torch lit by the likes of Mick McManus, the Crabtrees, Haystack and the legendary Kendo Nagasaki is being carried on by the younger generation. Excellent.

Sorry but do you need help? Like serious help? Majority of the people that went were friends and family of the fighters! So please explain to me how going to watch my sons fight is dodgy?

You obviously have an agenda to stop things like this happening in Liphook, why because it isn’t posh enough sport for you?
If you weren’t there and didn’t purchase a ticket politely pipe down and keep you opinion to yourself.

It was a roaring success enjoyed by the fighters (aged 8 and up!) and all family and friends that went. All coaches were proud of every single one of them fighters on Sunday.

Can I also add that they were BOXING not wrestling. At no point was anyone “rolling around the floor” with each other.
If you are that interested in it I’m more then happy to provide the link for the grassroots video that recorded the whole event!

From what I heard and saw it looked like a great sporting event and I'm glad it was such a success. A fantastic sport for the kids to be involved in, so well done to them. And it was in Liphook, just brilliant.
I think we are all coming to the conclusion that a particular individual just hates on everything. Maybe for their own kicks, but probably to be contrary and provoke conflicting opinions with other contributors, thats the definition of an online Troll isn't it?

Good luck to the kids who took part for the future, any sport is good sport.

Hi,

Learning Boxing for boys and girls is a great sport for now, and in their future.

This help's keeping kids off the streets of crime, and drugs etc.

Also there is less dependency on their screen time, on all mobile devices.

Help's their fittest for health at a developing age, also staying away from junk food, and obesity.

Why not set-up on our Millennium Green an event, for all of our community.
This could be called "Liphook Village Boxing Rumble".

A Ring, and event, for all ages of competitors, including referees to officiate.

This could be a local charities event. Playing bands for music, on an open lorry trailer. Street food stalls, etc.

What's not to like!

Hi,

Yes please Boxing Mum.

Re: Re Amateur Boxing event today (Sunday) at Millennium Centre

Boxing Mum, I didn't mean to cause any offence. I mentioned wrestling because that is held at the same venue. I've nothing against boxing at all, but like any sport, accept the risks. God bless Johnny Owen.

I try not to make any personal comments about any poster but some of D’s posts make me fume. Particularly this one. He/she very rarely posts anything positive or nice on this site. Negativity is the tone of the majority of his/her posts. Of course, that is the right of any poster but posters who consistently do this must expect a reaction which is probably want they want all along. The word “troll” springs to mind.

Boxing Mum, I think it is great that your son is engaging in sport. Physical activity is good for the mind and body. D's presumption that you should be aware of the risks is nothing less than patronising, because I am sure that as a mother you are aware of this and the necessary precautions and due care are taken. On the subject of danger/risks, this applies to many sports ie rugby, equestrian jump racing, equestrian eventing, motor cycle racing and many, many more. This does not mean people should not participate – yes, people should be careful and not take unnecessary risks, but we cannot wrap ourselves in cotton wool all the time.

Obesity also kills and the main cause of obesity, apart from the obvious ie overeating and eating all the wrong things, it is caused by lack of exercise. Boxing Mum you keep encouraging your son and I wish you and your family all the very best.

Charlie, I really don't see how I am being "negative". I have not criticised boxing or anyone who has an interest in boxing. It's an excellent way to teach young people discipline and self control. I mention the late Johnny Owen because I doubt any of the parents of these young people have ever heard of him. I followed his career all through the late seventies until that fateful night in California, best bantamweight this country ( okay, Wales) has ever produced. I really don't see what your problem is.

D It always makes me smile when someone says “I really don’t see what your problem is.” That sentence usually indicates that it is the person making that statement is the one with the problem. ie C’s post on 6 October responding to you in the Thread about children in Sainsbury’s trolleys. “It must be exhausting to be so angry all the time! “
Back to this post - in your post 12 October You stated that “I'm surprised a relatively affluent area such as Liphook would be interested in boxing and wrestling “ so people reading this thread, including myself, must be forgiven for thinking you were putting boxing and wrestling in the same category and Boxing Mum corrected you and said the event was about boxing not wrestling. Maybe I should have used the words when referring to your original post as “patronising” or “passive negative”. You quickly seemed to change your opinion on boxing in your later posts.
I still stand by my comments that you rarely post a positive or pleasant post and are guilty of making snide and inaccurate comments ie in the Thread “Elections” and I quote your post dated 24 September. “ The only people who didn't buy their council house were people who had their rent paid and weren't paying any rent anyway. ”Unpleasant - making a dig at people on benefit and untrue because I know two families who were paying rent for their council houses and never bought them. They could not afford the high mortgage rates and they are still renting from the council.

Re: Re Amateur Boxing event today (Sunday) at Millennium Centre
- D (16th Oct 2025  17:17:07)

Charlie, I have already explained that I referred to wrestling as it is held at the same venue. Nowhere did I change my view as I have not degraded boxing once. The basis of my comment is that child boxing clubs are usually held in deprived areas such as Leigh Park. No, I'm not knocking Leigh Park, there was an item on local television only this week about exactly that. Council house sales, given that privatising the council houses would only mean rents increasing (the forty year ago me was spot on there) it is not unreasonable to say that anyone having their rent paid would not purchase, bit pointless really. You mention high interest rates, I couldn't afford them neither, so I took an evening job, that wasn't enough, so I took a weekend job as well. I am all for civilized discussion and debate but I fail to see what is to be achieved by talking about someone else's postings. Engage in healthy debate and disagreement yes but finger pointing like a deranged peasant with a grudge in the French Revolution achieves nothing.

Have to admit was surprised that this event was held again at Liphook. The infrastructure cannot support the sheer number of patrons that attended.

Access to Sainsbury’s side of the housing estate was blocked with cars reversing and turning round, with double parking all along the blind corners. There were cars and mainly vans parked up off-road on the Millennium green banks also damaging the grass.

I noticed dogs were left in vehicles during this time also which I don’t agree with.

A lot of smoking and swearing from the gathered parents too!
I didn’t know Liphook has a boxing club for kids but it’s the chaos of hosting an event that I don’t think the Millennium Hall have thought about when access to the estate is compromised.

D Your last sentence " Engage in healthy debate and disagreement yes but finger pointing like a deranged peasant with a grudge in the French Revolution achieves nothing" substantiates everything I have been saying. You just can't stop yourself from posting insulting remarks.
