Red roses and 3 lions
- Scott (6th Sep 2025 19:17:04)

Great job Englands Rugby ladies. A resounding win against our antipodean cousins this evening. End of the group games and powering into the quarters. A bit sketchy at times but persevered for the win.

A relatively easy pass in the Euro Qualifiers for Englands mens footballers. But still, a win.

Come on Englands sportsmen and women🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

I'm sorry, I've no comment on any of the pre or post match punditry as I don't watch it. But if thats your thing and prefer that over the actual games then I hope you enjoyed that too😊

Like Eurovision it’s a shame to see the LGBTQ+? community trying to take over the ladies rugby and football. Our 12 year old girl really wants to play but was put off as all her peers called her a lesbian.
Why can’t sport be a safe place without any self declaration of sexuality and preference.

Re: Red roses and 3 lions
- Scott (9th Sep 2025 20:36:35)

Ah no, Thats a real shame Sally.

Would she not even have a go at one of the local clubs, I think Haslemere, Petersfield and Alton all have girls squads. She may enjoy it so much it may not bother her what others think about it.

Her choice obviously but still maybe worth a try.

Who knows , we could be cheering your daughter on in a few years time👏🙌

Good luck😊

Re: Red roses and 3 lions
- A different M (10th Sep 2025 09:52:07)

Surely Sally it's her "Peers" with the problem (ignorance comes to mind) calling her a lesbian because they believe you have to be a Lesbian to play Women's Rugby?
Nothing to do with the Gay Community!
In fact I imagine any of the Women playing Rugby, whether gay, bi or straight wouldn't care less how you identify as long as you take part and enjoy yourself.
Kids will be kids and always highlight differences, hope your daughter thinks again and decides to give it a go.

Re: Red roses and 3 lions
- er (10th Sep 2025 10:56:10)

Sally, that is so sad, but thank you for being brave enough to share it, does nothing in society ever change or are we destined to keep repeating our past? Be strong for you and your daughter.

I understand straight people can be horrible and nasty and homophobic and every thing else, that's why we need robust laws to protect all our communities.

The gay community (LGBTQ etc) is generally considered to be more welcoming and willing to accept other people's choices and differences for who they are, albeit understandably anxious of the straight community at times, but we must all live alongside and among each other.

I hope you are able to continue to show your daughter to be above the abusive idiots, we'll all encounter many of them throughout our lives so teach her to be whatever she wants to be and enjoy her rugby, (I'm sure you do) this is her world whatever she wants to do, be proud, straight, gay or whatever, they cannot stop you, those days are gone.

Sport should be fully inclusive and open to all, but above all it should be fun, we can't let small minded idiots win, as they used to say at school in my day 'don't worry about the bullies they are more screwed up than you' which incidentally, helped no kid who was being bullied ever:)

Re: Red roses and 3 lions
- D (10th Sep 2025 11:58:49)

That's a shame, Sally. My own opinion on this is if you worry about what others think then you'll never stop worrying. Don't let that put your daughter off, good for her. I enjoyed rugby thoroughly at school, no good at it but I enjoyed it. Sadly we are now expected to watch a transexual man fight a woman in a boxing match and accept it as the norm, but this is about your daughter. Tell her to enjoy her rugby and sod what her mates think.

Re: Red roses and 3 lions
- John (10th Sep 2025 13:45:36)

Is the real point here that lesbians shouldn't be trying to claim ownership of these sports and exclusive access. In fact there should be no reference to ones sexuality or else these sports should be proactively advertising that they are also hetrosexual friendly so they can lay claim to fairness for all shapes and sizes?

Re: Red roses and 3 lions
- D (10th Sep 2025 15:25:35)

Agree absolutely, John. So why was the boxing match between a transexual man and a woman made such a fuss of? Not so much by the media but the organisers themselves as if having a transexual man beating the crap out of a woman was some sort of great achievement in the evolution of man. Personally I think it was absolutely disgusting. Not that a transexual was involved, but the organisers thought it was an even and fair match. If I remember the woman boxer withdrew from the contest because the transexual was hitting her so hard she thought her opponent (he, she, whatever) was going to kill her. You don't say...

Re: Red roses and 3 lions
- A different M (10th Sep 2025 16:22:48)

I think you've misunderstood John.
Lesbians, or any other type of sexuality, aren't laying claim to anything.
It's the small minded uneducated homophobic idiots that think they are!

Re: Red roses and 3 lions
- A local (10th Sep 2025 18:17:16)

What's happened to sportsmanship then D?

We simply can't always win, no matter how hard we try. If I train for years to do the 100metres but I'm up against 6 world class Jamaican guys, I may as well stay in bed.

We don't complain, we don't demand that Jamaicans are excluded, we just understand we probably can't win that, but the competing or watching is equally entertaining and valid as a sporting event and we celebrate the obvious superiority of their genetic luck.

Same with the women issue. If they don't feel they can compete with other legal women who are trans, but are within legal testosterone limits etc etc, tough. If the rules allow you to enter you can compete, doesn't mean you have a god given right to win.

Let's leave it to the sports bodies to make the rules, not the Daily Mail

Re: Red roses and 3 lions
- D (10th Sep 2025 19:05:09)

A Local, I don't read ANY newspapers actually. Sportsmanship? You think pitting a transexual man in a boxing match against a woman is sporting? It's a bit like a Yorkshire terrier running against a greyhound, regardless of testosterone levels or any other bodily measurements. If modern day civilization (?) expects us to accept transsexuality as the norm then surely the best solution is to have two more classes in sport, trans men and trans women. Or is the word "trans" now socially unacceptable?

Re: Red roses and 3 lions
- John (10th Sep 2025 20:53:29)

To be fair D disgruntled lesbians are very frightening. The world really needs to return to good old Christian values and traditional heterosexual relationships or humanity won’t survive!

Re: Red roses and 3 lions
- Joe (11th Sep 2025 04:56:17)

I am sure that you have no need to be so scared of Lesbians, John. Have you been attacked by one? It reminds me of the saying “ A man’s biggest fear is that a woman will laugh at him. A woman’s biggest fear is that a man would kill her.”

I am sure that soon trans men will be prevented by law from participating in women’s sports and being sent to women’s prisons.

@ John
My previous post wasn't directed at you but at the daughter's peers, and others with similar views.
I now take it back as after your post (10th Sep 2025 - 20:53:29) I firmly direct it at you!

Re: Red roses and 3 lions
- k (11th Sep 2025 09:59:31)

What a sad world we live in - I was very saddened to read this post - Why do we have to be so judgemental in our attitudes in this country.

Surely wanting to play Rugby or any other sport whoever you are should be perfectly acceptable. So sorry to read this. ( Yes I know it's far from a Perfect World )

I hope you manage to overcome these hurtful comments - and go ahead & enjoy yourself, even though it can be hard to stand up against attitudes of Dinosaurs- be the better person -I hope your daughter finds a way to enjoy herself.

Re: Red roses and 3 lions
- Charlie (11th Sep 2025 10:37:56)

@ A Local The only sentence I agree with in your post is the last one ie “Let's leave it to the sports bodies to make the rules, not the Daily Mail”. Most sports bodies have now ruled that transwomen (male at birth) cannot complete in women’s sport and I absolutely agree with that ruling. Transwomen are still physically and biologically different from women and in physique and power they are much stronger than women. They can however complete in men’s sport. I am not prejudiced against transwomen, quite the reverse – I have a very good friend who is a transwoman, but they should not be allowed in women’s spaces or allowed to compete against women in any sport. For the record my friend agrees with me.

Re: Red roses and 3 lions
- James (11th Sep 2025 12:45:18)

@ Charlie, I do believe we all agree with your very accurate point, someone born male at birth can never be a woman and likewise someone birth a woman at birth can never be a man. People need to understand basic biology before any conversations can begin or have any meaningful outcome.

Re: Red roses and 3 lions
- John (11th Sep 2025 12:54:29)

I think we can all agree that lesbians are great like the KFC add says. It’s their sense of ownership of sports which are available to all and not exclusive lesbians only club/sports.

John-you are talking absolute rubbish.I know women who have played football , cricket and rugby with no signs whatever of what you are on about.

Re: Red roses and 3 lions
- A local (11th Sep 2025 15:53:08)

Charlie and James, in particular James, are you doctors?

It's good to hear that you have science and life nailed down to a T, perhaps you should go and lecture our medical profession who still believe in stupid stuff such as intersex or genetic variation!

You cleverly, perhaps after reading the Daily Mail or watching GB News, understand that almost the entire medical and legal profession are wrong when they say gender and sex are not the same.

Sex is a strict legal term that is often decided by one person in about 10 seconds after glancing at a new born babies genitalia at 3am while on night duty! I'm sure we could all agree, the law is the law and must be respected, the decision, albeit made in a moment, is the law!

But howthen, when the law after years of careful study, meticulous medical testing and statutory processes, orders a defined and legal change of sex? Do you suddenly disagree with the law, call it an ass, because we know better, the decision has already been made once and was final?

Maybe for some, but not for the proud nation whose laws I follow.

Mistakes should be rectified where possible and people's rights respected, the likes of the Potter woman etc are all vocal activists with a feminist cause who don't know everything.

Trans people don't get to change their sex arbitrarily, it takes many years of physical, mental and other medical assessments and procedures, it's not a case of 'I want to go in women's toilets so I'm a woman now' like the right wing gutter press will have us believe.

A wise man once said 'whoever controls the media controls the mind.' (the same guy who sang that people are strange!), nowadays we could amend it slightly to 'whoever controls the media you watch, controls your mind'!

I’m now having a HUGE identity crisis. I’m a lesbian but I don’t like sports. I also don’t have a crew cut and wear dungarees. How on earth will I fulfil my lesbian destiny? Should I try some sort of therapy so I learn to enjoy rugby. What a wake up call this has been. Thank goodness for the good folk of Liphook to make me question my sapphic tendencies!

P.s. better return that handbag I bought last week

Re: Red roses and 3 lions
- Joe (12th Sep 2025 09:36:36)

To be a “trans” person does not imply medical procedures- these days it usually means adopting women's clothing. The medical procedure route should really be called a “sex change” surely? “Trans” is someone in transition who may not have the full procedure. The law on this will soon be clarified.

Re: Red roses and 3 lions
- Charlie (12th Sep 2025 11:45:59)

A Local I found your post interesting and informative. It is a pity that in your first sentence you appear to be mocking myself and James, and for the sake of clarity in answer to your question, no, I am not a doctor nor do I have any medical training. I would like to make it clear I am not prejudiced against transmen or women, lesbian or gay etc etc. These matters are personal to the people involved and I am a great believer in “live and let live” as long as you do not hurt anyone or any animal. I would also take issue with you when you refer to JK Rowling as “The Potter Woman” as I feel you are being very disrespectful. You can disagree with someone without insulting them. I have a great deal of respect and admiration for her as she had the courage to speak publicly on a subject about which she feels passionate.

Having read extensively and no, not The Mail and nor do I watch GB news, it is my understanding that transwomen are, by definition, biological males while women are biological females. Male people are distinct from female people and therefore transgender women are not biological women and pregnancy is not possible for them as they lack a female reproductive system.
However my main interests in this subject lie in sport and women’s spaces. The question over whether transgender women can participate in women's sport has been a high-profile issue in recent years and the UK Supreme Court has ruled that the legal definition of a woman is based on biological sex and therefore is likely to have implications for sport at all levels from the elite to the grassroots. Judges at the country's highest court determined that the "concept of sex is binary", and that a person with a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC) in the female gender "does not come within the definition of a woman".

I personally would not include all sports, just the contact ones and sports which require strength and I would put all athletics into this category. I was a horserider and I think that maybe racing, showjumping, eventing and dressage are not necessarily about strength, but pure skill and interaction with another living creature so maybe the powers that be will allow this, who knows.
I also feel strongly that women’s spaces should only be allowed to biological women. I am sure not everyone will agree with the foregoing in my post but let’s agree to disagree peaceably and let the courts and the governing bodies decide. I am a firm believer that laws should be obeyed and respected, but sometimes laws are not good ones and people should seek the change them by democratic means.

Re: Red roses and 3 lions
- D (13th Sep 2025 12:05:38)

All I know is, the Bible mentions man and woman. The way this "choose from a dozen genders" society is going it is only a matter of time until you are allowed to marry your dog or pony. Personally I think society is turning into a cesspit with further ramifications down the line. I do not for one minute believe a child of a same sex couple isn't going to be targeted at school and ridiculed and bullied. Would that then instill a hatred of homosexually and gender deviation in that child? Time will tell.

Re: Red roses and 3 lions

Its such a great weekend for womans rugby.
The quarter finals are taking place today and tomorrow. Its a world cup tournament, that in itself is something to celebrate and with that you can find a multitude of cultures and nationalities all with buckets each of their own national pride but still able to get along and enjoy the sporting moment for what it is, a game.

Sally, I hope you and you're daughter are watching the games and she is getting inspired to go along one day herself. Regardless of anyones personal sexual preferences or tendencies the passion and competition is there in bundles and there has been no mention of anyones sexuality in any way. (I really hope she doesn't get put off of anything in life just because someone else is negative about her own chosen directions)
