New 40mph limit - watch out!
- C (10th Jul 2025 12:01:51)
I’ve just seen today that Portsmouth Road (old A3) is now 40mph all the way down to the dual carriageway approaching Rake.
It’s not at all well signposted so take care.

Hi,
Sounds like another money-spinner for EHDC, easy motoring targets.
No doubt there will be speed patrol vehicles around.
Also patrollers, with hand speed guns targeting.

It is amazing how a County Council that is always highlighting funding cuts, can install new speed limits and associated signage but won't fix the same roads they are responsible for.
And also have no consideration about slowing travel down for people who need to move around to earn their living.
If your urgent need can not be met, no matter, the new slower speed limits are all.
What is particularly annoying about this new speed limit is the road has been a National Speed Limit for decades, so we now have vehicles that stop more effectively and are safer around corners; and yet money is being spent on slowing light traffic.
We will likely see some Police enforcement/education over the next few weeks, and then it will be yet another road with a new speed limit that has not been re-engineered to slow the traffic down, other than putting up a sign.
As taxpayers we are paying for this, but rarely get fully consulted!

Think that’s in west Sussex there’s a sign just after the railway bridge.
[editor]The new 40mph starts about 100m inside Hampshire, it seems. But main section is in West Sussex 👍[/editor]

Richard,
Yes we do have vehicles that stop more affectively and corner safely. Unfortunately we have many drivers whose interpretation of the national speed limit is foot to the floor, and any other speed limits are there to be exceeded.

Was there a public consultation before the speed limit was changed?
Will stand corrected, but my understanding is that statutory bodies and the public are usually consulted as part of the legal process to create or amend a TRO?

I imagine it was at the request of the local council of the area which is probably West Sussex they would have put out the consultation only for the immediate area not everywhere else as well.

I agree Jon. I went on a Speed Awareness Course many years ago and found it most interesting and informative. I learnt a lot and one of the things that has stuck in my mind was the gentleman running the course said that the setting of speed limits is reactive not proactive and speed limits are in place or changed because of incidents that occur and accidents.

Bonkers... one can drive that road perfectly safely at 60 unless one is a malcordinated idiot....
I'm so fed up with this nonsense, cars are so much safer and more efficient than 50 or even 30 years ago yet speed li it's a always seem to be cut for no or very little reason

Wasn’t there a fatal accident by the old pub opposite the Milland junction not that long ago? Likely the reason for the change if so.

Anyone who thinks it's safe to approach the Forest Mere turn-off coming from the Petersfield direction at 60 mph is a berk.Likewise cars coming off the dual carriageway near to the cricket club entrance too fast.Added to the speeding problem is the fact that some drivers can't stay off their phones while they are driving, which makes their reaction time slower.

J, you may be thinking of the one over thirty years ago, red ford sierra two young security guards. Was only that vehicle involved.

J may be referring to a 2 vehicle collision in January 2018 in that area. One person died as a result.

It's not all about your car and the speed... Crossing the road at several points along this road is an issue.
Walkers, golfers and horses riders are at risk.
Slow down, what's the hurry.

Golfer I do so agree. A statistic worth mentioning is "You save 5 minutes by driving 10 miles at 60 mph compared to 40 mph. At 60 mph, it takes 10 minutes to drive 10 miles. At 40 mph, it takes 15 minutes to drive 10 miles. So for sake of 5 minutes is it worth risking an accident which could be fatal.
[editor]Just to say the length of road reduced from 60 - 40mph is only 1.2 miles. So 1min 12secs at 60 against 1min 48secs at 40mph. So 36 seconds longer. You shouldn't really notice that. [/editor]

As my Nan used to say, "it's better to be late in this world than early in the next!"
Worth reflecting on I think!

Rob,
Beware the uncoordinated idiots next time you are on the road, there are plenty of them.
