French Market on Sat 11 March
- Tom (13th Mar 2006 - 15:54:08)

I went to the French market on the green by the Millenium Hall on Saturday and was pleased to find a good selection of authentically french produce (and some of the vegetables even had some flavour).

It got me thinking about how much I miss having a decent local market selling local fresh produce in the village. I have lived in other parts of the country where local produce markets are so frequent you buy most of your food there. It's also good to support local produce in all sorts of ways.

I don't know the legal side of the right to hold a market, but surely if the French market can be run, a local one could be run on similar grounds?

The market would be a good idea I agree but there are several local growers from whom you can buy direct. Also there was a regular farmer's market in Petersfield on Sunday mornings and I presume it is still going.

Sorry to have missed that event.

While I agree a local market would be lovely, we have a very good selection of local farm shops with excellent fresh produce at reasonable prices available to anyone prepared to drive a few miles.

Of choice are Country Market (much of the veg grown on the farm there), Blackmoor and the one on the Headley Road just out of Grayshott.

Try this to get a list (or Yellow Pages)

We do have a really good selection of local Farmer's Markets with plenty of healthy competition to keep the quality up and prices down. There is usually a fantastic range of organic meat and produce and artisan cheeses etc.

Try Petersfield (10am - 2pm 1st Sunday of the month) for a local taster.

Winchester (9am - 2pm 2nd Sunday of the month) for one of the largest Farmer's Markets in the UK.

Secretts at Milford (10am-1.30pm 3rd Sunday of the month) where you will also find Secretts farm shop which is an experience in itself. The veg. here (when fresh) is as good as it gets.

Farnham operates on the 4th Sunday of the month (10am-1.30pm)

Winchester gets another bite at the cherry (in season) on the last Sunday of the month (5th., if there is one, else 4th.)

Whilst the French Market was interesting, it will never take off with prices like theirs - Cheese at £12.00 a Kilo - once a year is enough. No Foie Gras this year, either.

I had no idea there were so many markets and farm shops near here so will investigate, especially Secretts.

However, since the object is to buy organic food stuffs, it would be much better to have a Market in Liphook, instead of having everybody driving all over the Hampshire countryside polluting the air!!

BTW I don't at all approve of foie gras, I think it should be banned!

- So presumably the organic foodstuffs would get to the organic market by organic horse and cart!

(Not much in the way of organic farms around here unfortunately so the food has to travel if the customers don't, a bit 'swings and roundabouts' really)

I love the idea of an organic horse and cart Liz!!

However, organic or not, your argument would only be logical if each market trader only sold to one customer.

I'm assuming they would do better than that :)

My comment was a bit tongue in cheek, but I was assuming that most people would drive to a market in Liphook and I couldn't see much difference between that and driving to County Market or wherever.

(P.S. I can provide the organic horse, but no cart, sorry!)
