Road works Headley Road
- Kathy M (28th May 2025  11:03:37)

I was dreading the 4 day Roadworks on Headley Road - Gas - BUT have actually found the flow of traffic much better than when the parked cars cause chaos at busy times. Traffic lights improve the flow immensely - Any one else found this the case.

Strongly agree

Re: Road works Headley Road
- Charlie (28th May 2025  13:18:54)

I agree wholeheartedly. It is also much less dangerous. Trying to safely pass sometimes 6 or 7 parked cars when you cannot see the road ahead is very dangerous. Cars should not be allowed to park on that stretch of the road. The houses do have drives.

Don’t see a problem with the parked cars . What happens when the tailback reaches the square hum . The cars on Portsmouth road are worse longer stretch and you can’t see what’s coming in from down the road. And only some have driveways and those people park in them . It’s a very good traffic pinch point to slow the speeding cars down same as they have in most cities and towns. If you can’t be patient for a few minutes then you shouldn’t be driving. Let’s have on street parking all over liphook like the old days when the A3 came through.

Resident,
When the A3 ran through Liphook, Portsmouth Road was a clearway, no stopping. The only vehicle allowed to stop was the number 24 bus.
Whilst roadworks are in progress on Headley Road where are all the cars usually there parked? If they’ve found a suitable alternative why not make it permanent and relieve the traffic congestion.
Traffic does need to be slowed down, let’s see some speed bumps.

And the accidents and damage to the vehicles parked on the Headley ?

Count them. The last incident involved three parked cars, at least one of them was written off!

Resident It is not just a question of slowing the traffic down, as I said in my previous post, it is dangerous trying to pass sometimes six or seven cars, as it is impossible on the Headley Road to see if you have a clear run. Patience does not come into it. The fact to be taken into account is the danger. On the Portsmouth Road, if the cars are not enormous it is possible for two to pass each other. In addition because the Portsmouth Road bears slightly to right you can actually see if it is safe to pull out and pass the cars even if there are as many as ten cars parked there. One day there will be a serious collision on the Headley Road

Resident - are you real ?????

Re: Road works Headley Road
- Ben (29th May 2025  09:20:09)

I drive past those cars every day without incident. Navigating this road simply requires patience and basic driving skills. It is a straight and flat road, so a few stationary vehicles should not pose a problem. The traffic situation is improved this week for two reasons: it is half-term, and the traffic lights compel the typically impatient drivers to stop.

Ben Your eyesight must differ from mine which I must add meet the standard for driving according to my ophthalmologist. I say this because however good your eyesight is, it is impossible to see cars driving towards you on the right when there are six or seven cars parked on the left. I conclude that you either live in one of those houses and have a vested interest in parking being permitted on that stretch of road or you have been very lucky on all the occasions that you have driven that road with perhaps only one or two cars parked together leaving a space left to pull in before the next parked car. On many occasions that has not been my experience and I repeat it is dangerous to all including the parked cars see Paul Robinson's post.

Re: Road works Headley Road
- Ben (29th May 2025  11:35:10)

I live on Headley Road but not in the houses. I see cars speeding all the time, and the only thing that slows them down are parked cars. So yes, I do have a vested interest, I want to protect everyone else who uses the road and footway, it’s not just for cars. It's hard to understand why you can't see past six cars, especially with a driveway entrance where you can pull in. The problem also lies with oncoming traffic that doesn't slow down to let a few cars through, adding mere seconds to their journey. If everyone was a bit more courteous, there wouldn’t be a problem.

Re: Road works Headley Road
- Resident (29th May 2025  13:02:18)

Totally agree BEN headley road has become a race track. If you keep to the 20 limit coming of the square down headly road you more than likely have a car right in your boot glaring at you and if you stick to the 30 limit on your way they get so aggressive behind you so yes it’s dangerous for idiotic drivers. And at school time the junction at the avenue is a nightmare cars overtaking the queues in both directions because they can’t wait with children crossing on the crossing. As for the accident what can you say very poor driving to hit a stationary vehicle.

Re: Road works Headley Road
- Charlie (29th May 2025  13:10:05)

Ben I really don't understand your post. The problem is you cannot pull in if there are six or seven cars parked bumper to bumper on the left hand side as you approach The Square and whatever you claim, you cannot see if the road ahead is clear to pull out. If you are really worried about speed, support putting in place speed bumps as there are in Lindford - it is not safe for cars to be parked on this part of Headley Road.

Re: Road works Headley Road
- Resident (29th May 2025  14:07:01)

No no Charlie speed humps damage cars lindford has done just that . The best way is pinch points like in the midhurst road by the fire station alternate stopping all the way down headly road. Traffic needs to slow down in liphook and of course the powers to be should divert a lot of the traffic around the square ie Haselmere traffic on the A3 north junction should not come through liphook totally ridiculous. Lots could be done but we seem not to have the power to do so .

Re: Road works Headley Road
- Ben (29th May 2025  14:08:19)

I don’t think I expressed opposition to the installation of speed bumps, but there currently are none, so this solution is the best available. Personally, I have no difficulties overtaking six stationary cars; however, I cannot speak for others who may face challenges in doing so.

Hampshire County Council approved at the end of March, 2 road humps outside Oak Lodge & 77/79 Headley Road & a raised Zebra crossing.
This was following a consultation period in which 2 objections were received. Officers decision record/PDF on link:

- Perplexed (29th May 2025  15:14:36)

There absolutely aren't 6 or 7 parked bumper to bumper! There's no way for that to happen, there are driveways there! You will get two cars closest to the square, then there's a driveway then you get another 2 cars, maybe 3 depending on size and then there's actually a DOUBLE driveway. You may then sometimes get one or two cars after that. There's a pretty good view down the road, you simple have to move over to the right and... look, and the driveways give several places to pull in! Are people really that unobservant that they dont see the driveways or the pattern of cars if they're constantly driving past them and its such an issue for them? As someone who grew up in a city I'm amazed people have such a problem with navigating this!

Well said perplexed.

Re: Road works Headley Road
- J (30th May 2025  06:58:45)

Resident,
Speed bumps only damage vehicles if they are driven over at excessive speed.
I’ve driven over the speed bumps in Lindford a myriad times without detriment to the car. The speed bumps are not excessive but they certainly keep the traffic within the speed limit. More effective than pinch points.

Re: Road works Headley Road
- M (30th May 2025  08:16:40)

I agree with Ben and others.
If you can't negotiate passing a line of parked cars safely then you shouldn't be driving.
Wait your turn and pass when it's clear. If it takes a 5 minute wait so be it. If you can't, or wont, wait then it's you that are the problem, not the legally parked cars.
