Welcome to Liphook, we wish you every success but . . . please . . .do something about the exterior of the building which gives quite the wrong impression as an introduction to a new business.

Yes , quite agree with Paul Robinson - it looks awful and spoils the village center , if you want to be part of Liphook, then care about it.

Hi,
I like good Far-Eastern cuisine, not interested in exterior of business.
If healthy, and hygiene quality, then enjoy?

Re: Coming soon ...
- D (24th May 2025 19:24:43)
As always Paul, you are your polite, courteous, welcoming self. Shame about the other two.

Re: Coming soon ...
- Joe (24th May 2025 22:04:17)
The business may not have bought the freehold premises anyway that may belong to someone else so the exterior appearance may not be theirs to enhance. So long as the food is good and preparation hygienic that is important.

How lovely to see the new owners of this property are refurbishing the outside of the premises - it will make this much neglected eyesore so much better for Liphook, and thanks to them for doing it. So , troll on those who think the quality of food has nothing to do with the appearance of the retail outlet . Pride in all areas says a lot for this new venture. The very best of luck for success. Can't wait to give it a try ....

Re: Coming soon ...
- Rob (5th Jun 2025 10:13:28)
I'm keen fo try it, any update on when you're opening please?
I don't do Facebook.
It's a shame that it's only going to be a takeaway, I'd have thought it was ripe for a full restaurant with the unused Lazy Lizard next door. It would be nice to have another place to eat out in the village. Guidos is great and the Green Dragon isn't bad, but other than that the choices are limited to pub food which at the Anchor is dreadful.

 |
Re: Coming soon ...
- Russ (5th Jun 2025 11:43:22)
Rob the dragon is fantastic food well cooked. We do have a really good selection of good pubs around the area something for everyone. Yes it would make a nice restaurant put together not my cup of tea Indian not for me but is very popular.

Re: Coming soon ...
- Mark (5th Jun 2025 12:35:36)
Rob on checking their FB page, it still doesn't have a definitive date for opening, rather a 'next week ' posted twice on May 24th & May 26th
May 24th post;
Opening hours will be 04:30pm - 22:30pm - 7 days a week including bank holidays.
Stay tuned for our grand opening next week!
Menu hasn't been posted yet,but south Indian & Sri Lankan sounds great & a much needed alternative to other food outlets already in the village.
The local pub food is overpriced IMO.

Re: Coming soon ...
- Joe (5th Jun 2025 13:36:36)
Food fan no one is “trolling” anyone it is a takeaway establishment. I wish them well and hope that it is good South Indian and Sri Lankan food. We do need more choice than we currently have and Indian food is the second most popular if not now the most popular take away food after fish and chips.

Welcome, it's just what this town needs.
Indian food is our national cuisine and nobody does it better than us, a blend of the spices India is famous for and British taste, you can't get a better curry experience than here in Blighty! Hope to see you when I'm about.

Not sure the illuminated sign is going to go down well in a conservation area ?
|
 |
Re: Coming soon ...
- N (7th Jun 2025 19:32:17)
Illuminated sign looks good...lets face it it's not exactly the prettiest village square in the world anyhow so don't worry about the above post
Looking forward to trying the food.

An opening date would be good and a menu

- Local Resident (8th Jun 2025 12:24:26)
It is indeed great to see the works being done to the outside of this building - thank you Ponnamma Kitchen/the property owner/whoever has taken it on themselves to do this.
If the fenced off bit at the back could be similarly refurbished, then I am sure many residents of the Headley Road - like me - would be very happy.
Good luck with your new venture...!

Re: Coming soon ...
- Food Fan (9th Jun 2025 15:34:01)
The signage would suggest that it is to be a Convenience Store as well as a Takeaway outlet - let's hope they have some ethnic goods.
|
 |
Re: Coming soon ...
- er (9th Jun 2025 20:30:55)
Dunno, but what is an 'ethnic good' as opposed to an 'unethnic good' I wonder?
Being a convenience store, I should imagine it would sell milk, bread, chocolates, crisps, sausages rolls etc, I'm not sure Liphook yet has a big enough 'ethnic' goods eating population for anything too different to the above standard British convenience food diet😁😂

- villager (10th Jun 2025 12:34:38)
Please take those awful signs down NOT in keeping with the village
|
 |
Re: Coming soon ...
- villager (10th Jun 2025 14:06:26)
Yes. It needs to be in keeping with the village. Like the beautiful green estate agents we have. A whole building painted, and so tastefully too. Or the lovely looking thai massage parlour. Or the glowing barbershop poles. Or the huge empty Lloyds unit. Or the many other empty shops we have in Liphook, for that matter.
We have an unremarkable square, that is increasingly empty of shops and full of traffic. Anything opening at this point is a good thing. You'd think it was a UNESCO world heritage site reading the curtain twitchers here.

Re: Coming soon ...
- Aren't we all villagers? (10th Jun 2025 15:21:33)
Hadn't seen the signage, but spotted yesterday.
Truly awful, they've managed to make a depressing building worse. Makes the corner like something out of Bordesley Green rather than Hampshire.
If not challenged you can get a sense of what Liphook will look like in around 3-5 years from now.

Re: Coming soon ...

Hi,
Is not the Square a local conservation area?
The signage of this premises, may not have been applied for, or agreed.

Re: Coming soon ...
- Aren't we all villagers? (10th Jun 2025 17:08:37)
Thanks for sharing the relevant doc, Editor. Hopefully the Local Council and EHDC will intervene and enforce as appropriate.
In the meantime - and I know this is a tough but necessary stance to take if we intend to maintain standards for our local area - #boycott.

Rumour has it that when Timpsons have to leave Sainsbury's they are moving in to The Lazy Lizard.

Re: Coming soon ...
- Nigel (11th Jun 2025 06:13:54)
I do hope the shop/takeaway does well and it’s to good to see new businesses move into the square but the signage does look cheap and distasteful.

Re: Coming soon ...
- SG (11th Jun 2025 11:31:15)
Signage is distasteful and not in keeping of the village square. Shame.
|
 |
Re: Coming soon ...
- Salty (11th Jun 2025 13:39:14)
It does not look in keeping, conservation area or not - rather what you might see in an inner city - not a village in Hampshire - hope they will amend this impact - as other posters have said there are some businesses in the immediate area who have enhanced the overall appearance of The Square.
|
 |
Re: Coming soon ...
- er (11th Jun 2025 15:19:33)
Whilst it is not the prettiest 'Square' and it takes a bit of poetic licence to even be considered 'square', it is still a conservation area.
Yes, it's a working area and not, (by any means), a chocolate box village square and it seems to have grown haphazardly, without a single vision such as many other lucky towns have had, too small for any enlightened urban planners to bother turning their attention to, it is however full of character and history and some very interesting and ancient buildings. For all it's flaws, it is much loved by the residents.
For this reason special care and consideration must be given to any alterations and I would hope proprietors and/or EHDC would consider again as appropriate.

Wish I had time in my life to complain about a few signs from a new local business. What a welcome.

Re: Coming soon ...
- M (11th Jun 2025 16:37:55)
Nothing will change unless those who have an issue actually advise EHDC Planning Department, even then it will take ages for anything to be done.
Just look at Sainsbury's and Timpsons! Refused planning permission, they went to appeal and lost but Timpsons are still trading!

Re: Coming soon ...
- H (13th Jun 2025 11:25:45)
Please remember this is a real family trying to bring positivity to the community. They aren't going to get it right first time! Exterior design and mending costs MONEY! They may not have the funds to amend this right now. At least give them a few weeks to find their feet. Stunned by how rude people been be.

Re: Coming soon ...
- Life time resident (13th Jun 2025 12:29:15)
Well just come back from holiday been following the thread. Was very keen to see the new sign and improvements so glad that the premises have been takeover and will trade again. Not my sort of food but hopefully it will make a lot of people happy we need more people willing to start new business. Know as for the sign as quite a few have said not in keeping with a conservation area yes it’s not a fabulous square but it’s OUR square the only one we have with loads of history it would be nice if we could keep it reasonably tidy and in keeping the sign is very out of place in that area would fit on a seafront or a city centre hopefully they will come to see it that way . We will see what the new shops opposite the dragon come up with if they follow suit it will be like a city centre. Thought there was some very strict rules governing conservation areas. Perhaps our Parrish council will take a look . But all that said hope they make a go of it .

Re: Coming soon ...
- Local resident (13th Jun 2025 13:11:55)
The signs seem to have come down as of Friday morning.
It looks like building has been painted - great! - so maybe they will go back up again?
The signs are a bit….bonkers? Particularly as the building is in a conservation area.

Re: Coming soon ...
- David (13th Jun 2025 19:53:30)
Looking forward to opening time. The business owners have taken notice of the signage which is respected. I hope they make a success of their new venture.

Re: Coming soon ...

Regarding the unsightly signs:
Perhaps the best mode of action would be if diners would mention the disappointing signs as they compliment the chef? Sometimes public, grassroot, bottom-up, commercial polite nudging can be more effective than top-down enforcement of conservation laws.

Nice to see the premises has had a paint job on the outside, long over due, looks nice, well done !!

Re: Coming soon ...
- Unimpressed (14th Jun 2025 15:00:20)
Well the signs have gone back up so looks like they are to stay. Makes a mockery of it being a conservation area looks more like a bizarre in china town. Hopefully the Parish council will take a look, the old post office next to the cinema is a prime example of tasteful decor for a conservation area and most if not all the premises are the same. What’s the point of having a conservation area and not keeping that way.

Unimpressed -
Agree , looks like an urban superb , not a rural part of Hampshire.

The signs have not gone up and the building has been repaired and painted and is looking much better than it has done for the past few years. I wish them good fortune in their new venture.

Think the signs are up when I drove through at lunch time today. Very bright just like you get in a city not in keeping with other shops and a conservation area . Don’t know when you looked Paul.
