Dead badgers
- liz (8th Mar 2006 - 13:32:45)
We have seen seven dead badgers in the area on or near the side of the road in the past two weeks. Two in the lanes between Liphook and Headley, one in Headley, one on the A3 north of Liphook (on the southbound carriageway) and three on the 'old A3' south of Liphook. Have not given any a close inspection but none had obviously been hit by a car. I've lived in the area a long time and have very rarely seen a dead badger. I've heard that badger baiters have been known to dump the carcasses so we have reported this to the police, but I don't suppose there is much they can do. I know that at present farmers want a cull of badgers claiming that they spread bovine TB but they are still (so far) a protected animal. Would be interested in any views/insights as to what is going on.

Liz -
Take a look at:
http://www.nfuonline.com/documents/NFU%20TB%20web%20leaflet.pdf
This detailed pamphlet explains the problem and the suggested way forward.
There's a lot of info about badgers and populations. From the amount of badgers (live ones) I've seen in the area plus all the roadkills, I'd say we have quite a successful badger population - whether they are infected with TB is a matter for the vets.
Might be worth checking out the DEFRA site to see if they give advice about badger carcasses. Are the Ministry vets actually looking for the public to hand in carcasses so they can be tested for TB infection? Would make sense.

Liz,
Yes I've noticed this aswell - it does seem strange, I once read that if you should report a dead badger to the local Badger group in your area - they obviously know where a great deal of the sets are. I think the most local Badger watch group around here maybe in Petersfield - so perhaps you should have a little look around on the internet and find them. Good luck!

We do have a successful badger population but if I follow your logic, Freddie, that the rise in the number of dead badgers shows how successful they are then we're about to be overrun!! To go from seeing the VERY occasional dead badger (even on roads near setts and runs) to seeing seven (well eight now - saw another this w/e) in a very short time is very suspicious. I cannot access the website of the local badger group from my PC but was hopefully someone will see this posting - but will try and contact them by phone. The police have contacted the RSPCA who presumably would inform the local badger group.

The number of dead badgers along the old A3 is very suspicious. Particularly when they are in pairs. And some seem to have throat wounds. For whatever reason, sinister or otherwise, the amount dead seems uncharacteristic and a bit freaky.!!??

Police and RSPCA are investigating. Ideally they need a badger carcass to investigate the cause of death. - If anyone finds one which can be collected (without risk of getting run over yourself!) please take to the RSPCA (Local police will give you an RSPCA contact number).
Thanks

Just a thought......
Anyone who is interested might want to get in contact with the Lib Dem District Councillor at EHDC, Adam Carew. He is an expert (I think) on badgers and would be interested to know about this and may be able to offer some assistance.
