Sainsburys Comparative Prices
- Paul Robinson (1st Feb 2012 - 19:10:48)

This week when I paid for my groceries at the checkout I was presented with a money back voucher to the value of 1 penny !

When I questioned this I was told that this was the sum total I would have saved had I shopped at Tesco\'s. Each evening they price check their competitors and refund their customers if they are more expensive than Tesco\'s.

Might I suggest that they price match the diesel price at Morrisons and refund me the difference between their extortionate £1.439 per litre and Morrisons.

Petrol prices aren't easy to explain or work out...however there are certain reasons why pump prices vary so much.
They are different at each sainsburys site much like they are at each tescos, asda, esso etc...

It all depends what refinery and supplier they use and the distance from each and the quality of the fuel which also varies suprisingly depending on where the barrels of oil originate.

Don't ask me anymore, I just know the basics

In my experience the greatest influence on supermarket pump prices is the proximity of a competitor.

There is a road near Oldham where there is a Sainsburys and a Tesco facing one another across a dual carriageway. They both have petrol forecourts and battle with each other to sell fuel at the lowest price to increase market share.

I feel sure that if we were to get a Morrisons or Asda on the old OSU site we would see a remarkable change in fuel prices.

This is partially true but what you also have to realise is that those 2 sites probabaly have the same supplier so their prices will be similar anyway and in regards to the guys who work at these forecourts/stores they have no control over the prices. They are set by head office.

That is a fact.

So don't complain to them about the prices, and there is certainly not alot liphook can do about pump prices

Hi

I used to live in Watford where there was an Asda, Sainsburys and Shell all based off the same roundabout, needless to say the petrol was the cheapest in about a 20 mile radius (Asda always 1p less).

You can bet when Asda at Bordon opens petrol prices at Sainsburys will plummet!

Try Shell Liphook South (on the bypass).1p a litre cheaper than Sainburys and you get attended service with your windscreen cleaned for free!

Below is the response from Sainsburys when I queried it. The email is from 2008 but I suspect the policy has not changed. The gist..."We will charge what we think we can get away with before people stop buying our petrol" (my paraphrasing and quotes). When the Jet station was still here, Sainsbury was more "competitive". Funny that:

Dear Mr ...

Thank you for your most recent email. I understand you pass three Sainsbury’s stores on your way to work and all the fuel prices are different.

In the current climate, petrol prices are very volatile in an extremely competitive market. They differ throughout the UK and you will see varying prices even amongst outlets owned by the same company. If we were to set one national price, this would prevent our petrol stations from remaining competitive within their own local market. We therefore allow individual petrol stations to adjust their fuel prices in response to local competition.

I appreciate you are curious as to why the difference between leaded and super unleaded is now between 2p and 3p a litre. This is due to changes in the cost of super unleaded fuel, particularly with the current economic climate.

Once again thank you for your email. I hope I have assured you we will continue to monitor our fuel prices to make sure we are competitive.

Kind regards

Business is about competetition at the end of the day.

Nothing new.

I look forward to the new Asda store in Bordon!

I look forward to the new ASDA store in Whitehill too, but it does not appear to have a filling station.

I expect there will be a couple of charging points for the many electric vehicles that the residents of this "Eco Town" will be expected to use. (the ones that run on electricity generated by gas powered power stations). But I don't expect that will affect the price of Diesel at Sainsbury's very much.

- Mary W (4th Feb 2012 - 22:51:17)

I didn't realise that Asda was opening a shop at Whitehill. When is it projected to open?

If we could only get a Tesco's here to give a little competition to the big S I'd be delighted.

Re: Sainsburys Comparative Prices
- Chris (6th Feb 2012 - 20:36:50)

I reckon it\'s because they are profiteering, no immediate competition. The farnham sainsbury\'s is about 3p a litre cheaper and I bet it comes from the same tanker! And it\'s Surrey darling!

They are just taking liberties, I hope that Asda does arrive locally as
I would sooner drive to Bordon and pay the same than give them my hard earned cash in Liphook.

The fuel prices have rocketed since the Jet closed. So in light of the response from sainsbury\'s with prices set locally does that mean it\'s the local manager stitching us all up?

Does this also mean he can knock 5p off per litre without us having to purchase 3 months worth of groceries to obtain a voucher?

Re: Sainsburys Comparative Prices
- D. Advocate (7th Feb 2012 - 00:47:57)

Please look at Russ Ellis's post on another thread re what Sainsbury's were going to do for Liphhook if allowed to build their supermarket on the old OSU site. Now consider what they have done instead; and will continue to do.
Their fuel price is 7p more than Asda, Havant, per lt, 4-5p more than Ram's Hill, P'field and still you support them shafting you by filling up there. For Chrissake, go elsewhere. At some stage, with depressed turnover, they may well decide to "serve" the community they exist in. Or should

- Andy Stevenson (7th Feb 2012 - 08:45:10)

Instead of writing and writing and writing... moaning, why don't you contact them and give the reasons why and say "why is farnham cheaper than liphook?" or why such a price difference?

it seems like shooting someone in the back of the head, if they dont know whats wrong how can they fix it...

I am not saying their perfect etc but if we want to make things change we need to start here..

http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/sol/contact_us/contact_us.jsp#

the shell garage on the A3 was cheaper the other day.. thats the shell garage aka normally more expensive as of its location but I actually filled up

come on guys lets get it sorted

Re: Sainsburys Comparative Prices
- Dee (7th Feb 2012 - 14:54:51)

Neither A3 south or north bound had diesel today, the helpful man also told me that there was none in Petersfield.

Re: Sainsburys Comparative Prices
- Richard (7th Feb 2012 - 18:53:16)

At the top of the thread there is the response I received from Sainsbury. The answer, as a previous commentator added, is for people to think about where they buy their petrol. And also do not always go for cheapest as the supermarkets can sell as a loss leader to drive out BP, ESSO, etc. Unless you want to see petrol retailing dominated by the supermarkets of course?

Re: Sainsburys Comparative Prices
- Darren (8th Feb 2012 - 15:51:43)

Seriously for the sake of 1p per litre is it worth it. If you were talking 3 or 4p per litre more then thats another story. If the residents have such an issue with the prices then just stop using them that way they have no choice but to lower prices. I always try and fill up at sainsbury's mainly because they have the most professional, polite and frieindly staff I have ever come across. That kind of service is worth an extra penny.
