Forget Dog Mess Get Cars off Pavements!
- Jay W (22nd Jan 2012 - 17:55:31)
So many parents of the Infant and Junior Schools complaining about dog mess on the pavements but what about the wretched car drivers on the pavements while we are trying to walk to school with our children?
Last week as I tried to walk from Headley Road up The Avenue on Tuesday afternoon I had to stand still while at least 6 cars drove past me on the pavement - a woman with an infant school child in the front passenger seat even glared at me and a van driver didn't even have the decency to slow down.
On the morning it was a little damp (I think it was Thursday) my neighbour and I had to actually cross The Avenue with our children in amongst the traffic because the cars were on the pavement blocking it completely (admittedly that laurel hedge does need cutting right back but HCC seem satisfied if the owners carry out a little trim each year).
Pavements are for people! If more people tried using them for walking instead of driving over, we would all be better off. Children would arrive at school brighter and ready for learning and we wouldn't have so many irate drivers and near misses.
I'm thinking of photographing the offenders and naming and shaming.
Rant over - but woe betide you if you drive along that pavement towards me tomorrow!

I am a driver who goes to the school everyday, I have great sympathy for the pedestrians and the homeowners on the roads around the school.
On the same wet morning I had abuse hurled at me as I wouldn't move my car until the road had cleared to avoid people mounting the pavements!!
I have been in contact with the police and they are "looking into it".
They have suggested getting reg numbers of people doing this so they can identify them as soon as they arrive!
So it is not All drivers!!

I have lived in the Avenue for the past 7 years and I have seen this problem getting worse every year.
I'm lucky now that I work from home that I don't have to run the gauntlet of trying to get out of my drive in the morning and afternoon. (I time my trips out around the school run mostly to keep my blood pressure down).
I don't know what the answer is but I do know that its a lovely road to live in from about 20th July to the beginning of September - very peaceful and quiet ;)

There has just been a message through from the Juniors saying there is a Parish Council meeting tonight about the congestion around the schools, anyone is welcome, it's at 8pm!!

Alternatively the local police could come and book a few for obstruction so they may get the mesasge not to park on the pavement and obstruct it.

They have done on occasions, the problem is only then relieved for a couple of days if that!!
If the police make it down there they are so visible then everyone keeps to the speed limit and parks properly..... as soon as they go it all starts again!!

Well this morning in the pouring rain the traffic was horrendous. We walked up the wider side of The Avenue - and had to keep stopping for the cars doing the three point turns across the pavement into the driveways of houses and the flats on the corner! Even so, we dropped off our children and were on our way back before some of the cars had moved.
Does anyone know how the discussion at the PC meeting went? Unfortunately I had to be at a meeting at Bohunt school or I would have gone along.
Full sympathy for anyone living in the Avenue area - I don't know why drivers have to be so nasty when they are caught out in the wrong - what's wrong with a simple apology?

I used to live on The Avenue and had to fight my way out to the Headley Road every day to get to work....what a nightmare!
I appreciatethat it is wrong to mount the pavement but unfortunately there is a complete bottleneck coming out of The Avenue onto the Headley Road. So many times I got caught there and because cars are backing up behind you, and someone has chosen to overtake the parked cars you have no choice but to mount the pavement to get out. This is not because drivers are impatient, but because cars have parked along that narrow stretch of road on The Avenue from Headley Road up to Avenue Close.
Having experienced this over a period of some 9 years, I believe putting double yellow lines along just that bit of The Avenue would resolve this problem as cars could then move freely either way and more importantly stay on the road, and not have to mount the pavement! Quite often cars are parked right up to the junction of Headley Road making this a very dangerous stretch of road particularly for pedestrians.

In reply to Jays question I actually was the only member of public who attended the meeting and the Head Teacher of the Junior and Infant Schools who did an excellent presentation in trying to help elevate the traffic problems along the Avenue. The Council have taken her points on board and will look into the details.

Before Christmas I rang the police having seen several incidents around the crossing on Headley Road including 3 cars driving straight across when my daughter was standing waiting to cross. One was texting and appeared to be oblivious to the crossing and the pediestrians. Another car stoppped at the crossing but as my daughter was not quick enough for them, they set off again and drove across in front of her. Yes, they had a child in the back from the school. The final straw was when my daugter came home very upset becase a driver had shouted at her for not crossing the road quickly enough. The police promised to attend and check what was happening but I have not seen them.
If you drive along Headley Road and around the school at drop off and pick up time, please remember that children never expect you to drive on the pavemnent and will not be quick to move. They may also be walking to school and crossing roads for the first time on their own. It takes them longer to cross and they can easily be frightened and lose their confidence.
Please show consideration for children walking to school.

I would have attended the council meeting although the parents were only told late on the day of the meeting, so if like me need a little notice to arrange a babysitter etc.
Being a single parent trying to get a sitter at a couple of hours notice is near on impossible!!
It is a shame that more people did not attend, especially the people that cause the bulk of the problems!!
