Missing cat
- Melanie Barnett (12th Jan 2012 - 18:14:14)

My cat went missing on 10/1/12 from Hazelbank Close. His name is Malcolm and he is all black (no white bits) and he is 2 years old. Please could you check gardens, garages and sheds please and let me know if you have seen him. We have not had him very long and he is not familiar with the area.

Hello

Our cat went missing a few years ago and we were given some excellent advice to find him, which worked.

Unless something has happened, cats that have been spooked or trapped somewhere are generally within a two garden radius of your house. Even the most loving and domesticated cat can be so spooked by a dog/other cat/car etc (in our case a gang of crow-type birds) that they can be too afraid to go home, even if they can see home.

We were told to walk around the area once or twice a day (morning and night) calling our cats name, shaking a box of cat biscuit (familiar noise) and basically laying down lots of scent for our cat to follow home. Even scuff your shoes in clean cat litter for a familiar scent. We were also told to leave food and water outside, because again even the most domestic, home-loving cat can be too scared to come home (they are apparently very complicated creatures!!) but CCTV cameras have shown lost cats visiting their home gardens at night. Other cats might eat it too, but worth it for a couple of weeks.

It worked for us - after 6 nights away our little cat came home in the middle of the night - very scared and shaky!

We were told to do this for two weeks and keep fingers crossed.

I hope your cat comes back safe and sound.

I saw a black cat in Devils Lane outside our house,it was having a stand off with a ginger cat that spends its time hunting over here I don\'t want to get your hopes up, but it is not too far away from you, and I have not seen it before. It was the Haslemere Road end by the houses. Do hope you find him.

Hello, I live in the Berg Estate and a black cat has been visiting us on a daily basis for about a month. Resently his visits have been longer and has stayed the occasional night. I have asked around the neighbourhood and took him to the vet to be scanned but unfortunately he is not micro chipped. He is a large sturdy cat with very thick fur and is a jumpy with sudden movements. If this sounds like this could be your cat, please post a message and we can make arrangements.

Hi

We live on the Haslemere Road and back onto the end of Hazlebank Close. We have had frequent visits from an all black cat over the last week or so, finishing up any leftovers from our cats' breakfasts and suppers. This may well be your cat. We could quite easily keep him in and give you a ring so you could come round and see if he is yours. Please ring our landline on 01428 722460 if you want us to do that.

Thank you for all the responses about my missing cat. We still have not found him, but have had lots of leads. I should also have mentioned that he is micro-chipped and is short haired.

Have you got a picture? On flickr for instance

Hi Melanie,

The black cat is still at Sainsburys, I've just seen him. Not sure whether it's Malcolm but still worth another check. He's black, short haired and had a silver/light coloured collar. He looks as if he could be quite young as very petite, he did however have another feline friend with him, a tabby. I really hope you find him, it's not nice to have a missing pet.

Thank you for all your help and suggestions. I am pleased to report that Malcolm has been found. We managed to catch him in a cat trap in a neighbour's garden. It seems that he did not wander far. The Cat's Protection League in Haslemere were very helpful as we borrowed the cat trap from them. We are now keeping him inside for at least a month and being extra careful when opening outside doors.
Thank you
Melanie
