A3 North Thursday evening 6.30ish? - Mary W (9th Dec 2011 - 09:01:48)
Anybody know what the jam through Northbound tunnel was yesterday evening?

The power went in both tunnels so had to be closed. Power on astro turf pitches went out at roughly the same time at Bohunt school and power flickered on and off at home too.

What a disgrace! It took me 2.5 hours to get from approximately 1 mile north of the tunnel to Liphook last night - a complete shambles. Why did the tunnel need to be shut - health and safety I presume however it's only 1 1/4 miles long so I'm surprised that exhaust fumes would be an issue. Why oh why can't we be sensible about these things.
"Traffic managers are conducting an inquiry after the closure of the Hindhead Tunnel in Surrey caused gridlock in surrounding roads."

Looks more like an absolutely stunning level of design incompetence. Surely they designed for power failure in the design. If not, why not? Perhaps our elected representatives can ask the question formally at Parish, County and UK level? Report on Tunnel Operator. "Works well well not under pressure, but fails to turn in a good result when the pressure is on." And while we are doing post incident review, perhaps the local police force can explain their contingency plans for a tunnel closure, which are clearly wanting! Again a question for our elected reps...

Isn't there a back up generator?

It seems unlikely that the tunnel would have been designed without either twin power supplies from the national grid or with a standby generator if that was impractical
It is likely that when the main power feed failed the standby generator failed to kick in as intended. Probably a fault in the system software which was not discovered during the testing pre-opening.
Very embarrassing for someone but these things do happen! Hopefully they will be able to trace the problem and make the necessary changes to avoid future repeats
