The cobblestones will soon be removed from the Square

Can someone please explain to me why the cobblestones in the Square are being removed? Surely the money being spent on this could be put to a better use, like another crosswalk in the village? Today I saw two people almost hit when they crossed the street to Lloyds Pharmacy.

The removal will be no bad thing as many motorists and pedestrians are not sure what they are for , I assume they are courtesy crossings(???) but I have seen lots of people just walk out onto them like zebra crossings.

At long last someone else has realized that they are not a recognized crossing and people are toooooo lazy to use the two offical crossing.It does not help with the flow of traffic.
