Possible myxomatosis
- A. Ryan (27th Nov 2011 - 11:34:13)

While walking through the woods off Devils Lane I found a dead rabbit, looked very much like it had myxomatosis, Nasty disease, hope it's not back in the area.

Not sure it ever went away , i have often seen rabbits with myxo up at ontario, kindest thing (if you have the stomach for it !) is to put them out of their misery.

Has definitely not gone away and has decimated the local rabbit population over the last few months. (Used to see about 40 rabbits on our horse's field in the morning now about two.) Although they are it a pest it is heartbreaking to see them dying of this horrible disease and shocking to think the government once thought this was acceptable way to deal with the rabbit problem.

Myxy is around and during the spell of unseasonably warm weather in October one of my domestic rabbits caught it. She was slightly overdue a booster jab. Our other rabbit also caught it but had enough remaining immunity from the previous year's jab and fought it off.

Our rabbits only live in our garden and we are not visited by wild rabbits, so we thought we were safe, particularly by the autumn. The vet said that the sudden period of warm weather in October caused more biting insects to reappear and our rabbit caught it from insects.

It was horrible and I would recommend anyone to get their rabbits vaccinated or to make sure booster jabs are up to date, even if they only stay in a protected garden. I wish we had!

Hi, yes, I had exactly the same thing happen to me and had to have our rabbit put to sleep on Saturday, very sad. I thought she had an eye infection and was horrified to learn that it was Myxomatosis. In just 3 days she went from looking and acting completely healthy to being put to sleep. There is a 2 week incubation period so I am patiently waiting to see if our other rabbit goes down with it. I think the post should be renamed Myxomatosis Is Back!

Hi Hayley

Fingers crossed for your other rabbit. We had to have our first rabbit put to sleep too. The second rabbit came out in a couple of lumps and scabs but nothing worse and he fought it off, so fingers crossed for yours. We gave him a booster jab at the vets when we took him in to be checked over, so not sure if that helped or if it was just his remaining immunity. Horrible disease.
