Dog poo - again
- Sarah (16th Nov 2011 - 19:25:08)

Thanks a lot for allowing your dog to poo right in the middle of the pavement outside the Rectory next to The Church Centre in Liphook!
Narrowly avoided in the dark but illuminated just in time by the glow of the street light! Lovely for the girls and boys arriving for their dance lessons tonight and for various folk walking home from school and work this evening.

This is a serious health hazard that can lead to blindness. Please pick it up and put it in the bins provided round the village. You must have stood there waiting for your pooch to do its business so must be aware of your offense.

l am contacting the dog warden again tomorrow as we have the same in Tunbridge Crescent , on both pavements.

Longmoor Road from the pelican crossing down to Junior School was disgusting on Thursday. Three or four large supplies liberally spread by unsuspecting children's shoes and caught up in buggy wheels. Please, for all our sakes, pick it up! Carry nappy sacks in your pocket if you own a dog. It really is that simple.

I am joining in with this dog poo discussion.

Walked to school this morning and had to dodge countless piles of dog poo, mostly spread across the pavement by some poor unsuspecting previous walker/scooter rider.

If you want us to walk to school with our children (to reduce the traffic in Liphook and the nightmare parking scenarios in The Avenue etc), then something has to be done to improve the disgusting state of our pavements, and to slow the traffic down on in the village.

I have contacted the EHDC environmental health dog warden department via email to see if they have any bright ideas! Trying to think how you can reach dog owners with the 'pick it up' message (pardon the pun) - via packs of dog food, at the vets or via dog trainers? to impress on dog owners the importance of being a thoughtful owner and carry little sacks ...

There was a big pile in the middle of the kids training pitch in the rec last weekend!

As a responsible dog owner who picks up my dogs mess and others that I find left (yes that disgusts me too, picking other dogs mess up) it also drives me mad as it gives all of us dog owners and bad rep.

I don't know how to get through to the others either.

How can it be that so many people can be that lazy and disrespectful?

Any joy with the dog warden?

On the path that runs behind the new Lark Rise housing that links Hurst Close to Lark Rise I have noticed 2 bags of dog poo - why pick it up at all if you're just going to drop the bags??? I am not a dog owner, I've never been a dog owner - I hate them but I am trying to pluck up the courage to pick them up and bin them. They've split and it's such a mess.

Yesterday I walked to the park with my children. As always I returned home with poo to scrape off shoes and pram wheels. Next time I will be driving, I am sooooooo sick of this routine.

I've read many dog poo posts on this site over recent months, many asking for the advice / action of the Parish Council, namely Dawn Hoskins. The PC all have an awful lot to say about things that have happened in the past, yet none of them seem very bothered about current issues that bother us.

Re: Dog poo - again
- Jane G (21st Nov 2011 - 09:20:20)

I have always ignored the dog poo posts on here but I'm going to wade in now too!

I am a dog owner and regularly walk my dog around the local area...Weavers Down, Iron Hill, Radford Park etc. I also use the footpaths around Liphook a lot on my travels.

To be honest, I don't notice excessive amounts of dog poo around the place so much so that I would have to scrape my shoes anytime I walked anywhere, so I think this problem does need to be put into perspective. But I completely agree that any fouling of the pavements by a dog should be dealt with by the owner.

There seems to be particular areas that are a problem like Headley Road and I guess this is just down to the amount of pedestrian traffic along here.

From my experience of dog walking I think it is particular types of owners who fail to pick up after their dogs and it is these people that need to be targetted.

Sarah has the right idea...make dog owners feel guilty! So my suggestion would be to make some hand crafted signs (perhaps designed by children) that are located on lots of lamp posts in the problem areas so that dog owners might actually stop and think.

I don't know if there is a local fund that could pay for such a thing, but perhaps this could be raised by one of us at a Parish Council meeting?

Jane G - I too am a dog owner and I couldn't disagree with you more about this problem. Have you been to Holly Hills lately? You almost can't see the paths for dog poo and it takes nothing to flick it off the path with a stick as a bare minimum. Lots of cyclists and walkers use the area and it really is disgraceful behaviour to let dogs foul paths like this.

Oh people of Liphook, Jane G doesn't notice excessive amounts of dog poo, what are we all moaning about hey?

OPEN YOUR EYES JANE G.

My little boy walked dog poo into my hall carpet last week, before I had time to notice my 13 month old daughter was crawling in it. As far as I am concerned there should not be any poo on any pavements, there should not be a level that we find exceptable or a level we find excessive.

Is the dog warden intrested ? Are the parish council intrested? Can we do anything to make a difference? I'd be happy to patrol the pavements of Liphook once or twice a week if it meant we could improve this situation.

Re: Dog poo - again
- Jane G (21st Nov 2011 - 22:24:50)

Oh blimey I knew I would be shot down in flames!!

I managed to run right round the village tonight using the pavements and I didn't have to scrape my shoes when I got home...maybe I just got lucky ;-)

I absolutely know there is a problem but I was simply suggesting that we need to get to the root of the problem, which is that a very small minority of dog owners do not clean up after their dogs when they foul the pavement. I think this is disgusting too!

But of course the dog warden is not going to be interested...it's education we need, so I was suggesting that some meaningful notices would help and if they are designed by children using some emotive language this may be enough to make the culprits feel guilty!

Re: Dog poo - again
- Sarah (22nd Nov 2011 - 10:35:01)

I have had an email reply from Richard Smith the dog warden at EHDC. He says that they are concerned about dog walkers who do not pick up - the minority spoiling it for the majority who behave correctly - but that they rely on residents identifying culprits to them in confidence. They have limited resources to patrol but in extreme circumstances can arrange special street cleaning.

Hello

I am another Sarah who posted on here last month about dog dirt along Headley Rd between Tunbridge Crescent and the pedestrian crossing. My buggy and children were constantly getting covered in dog dirt on the walk to school.

To the lady who says there is not a problem, it might well be that other parts of the village are fine, or because you are an adult you can spot and avoid the mess you do see. Please note that many of the posts on here refer to areas where children are pedestrians. The area around school, including Headley Road, The Avenue and Avenue Close has a problem on a daily basis, generally in the mornings. It only takes one or two piles to be trampled on the pavement to affect the feet and buggies of lots of other people.

It is causing a big problem in these roads, we aren't commenting on the village in general.

I think your idea about children's posters is excellent!

Re: Dog poo - again
- Sharon (22nd Nov 2011 - 12:25:47)

The idea of posters drawn by children might prick a few consciences, if it is just laziness on the part of some dog owners that makes them walk away and leave the mess. Is it laziness, or is it that they just don't care? I often watch people with their dogs to check that they pick up, wondering if I should take a picture with my phone and start a name and shame campaign if they don't! I must say, when people know I am watching, they do pick up - presumably they would anyway. But I have noticed some people looking around while their dog is busy - perhaps looking to see if they can get away with it - or am I just being cynical?

Maybe, if there places that seem to suffer from regular fouling, a friendly neighbour could point a webcam out of the window, and posters could be around informing dog walkers that they are being recorded!

Re: Dog poo - again
- Jane G (22nd Nov 2011 - 14:27:29)

Sharon...expanding on your idea we could have something similar to a 'neighbourhood watch area' sign like a 'doggy poo watch' sign!! Sounds silly but again it may mean that people in particular problem areas do keep an eye out and talk to the offenders.

It would be good to find out if there is any funding available locally for signs to put up on lamp posts etc to prick consciences. I will see what I can find out and report back on here.

Did any of you see the BBC program 'That's Britain' last night.

Turns out that the most concerning thing in Britain at the moment is Dog Poo ! Forget the recession.

Well - maybe something needs to be done on a national basis, not just Liphook.
