Last night's Carnival
- Freddie Dawkins (30th Oct 2005 - 18:34:15)

Well, what did you think of the Carnival?

I really enjoyed what I saw of it. I walked from The Avenue past the floats as they assemebled, then through The Square and to Station Road, where I grabbed a soup in Chockles - great Vegetable Soup, Chrissie!

Then watched the parade go by and followed the tailenders back to The Square, with a brief stop in the Fun Fair on the village green.

Grabbed a (soft) drink in the Royal Anchor - fast service, thanks to Richard Merriman - and then a wander back down Longmoor Road.

I noticed the Overall winner was The Deers Hut "Trafalgar" float. Nice cannon by the way.

Thought the Likely Lads's (?) and their huge whale were great (thanks in part to Trevor and Sue at Liphook Hardware with their generous support).

Loved the water jets spraying some of the crowd. Pipe Band were stirring and some of the individual costumes were stunning. All in all, a fun night and I'm sure Jane Laver and her team have raised lots of money for local causes.

Thanks everyone on the Carnival Committee for providing a really enjoyable evening.

Freddie

freddie, that drink you had at the Anchor must have been spiked, or you were at another carnival last night!!

i saw no whale in the likely lads gospel church (fab float by the way) however i did see a fantastic shark going through the newtownies car wash!!

the strangest thing is though freddie, how come if you noticed the deers hut float won best overall that the bloody great cup is sat in the guides and brownies trophy cabinet?

could it be that those young girls have mugged john carver for the prize????

Maybe I had a glass of orange from the same batch as Freddie, it didn't come from the Anchor though. But I remember seeing a 'FIRST' certificate on the front of the Deer's Hut entry and a 'SECOND' certificate on front of the Guide's. When I heard the announcement that the Guides & Brownies had won best overall I remarked to my wife that the Guides appeared to have won second in class but best overall. Maybe there were magic mushrooms in the soup, or maybe there could be more clarity in how the results are advertised in the parade.

Wasn't it noisy though!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Well done to all for a great night.

Well, I must say something that looked very like a 'whale' went past my house around 4.30pm!!! and of course, as everybody knows, I never touch alcohol.

It was indeed a wonderful Carnival as usual, congratulations to everybody involved :)

Carnival!

What can I say!

This year was the first time I've got involved with the procession, and it was a remarkable experience. The atmosphere was fantastic, and the sheer amount of work and dedication put in by all the participants was breathtaking.

Personally I can't quite fathom how the Guides and Brownies got second in category, but best overall. Not complaining though, the girls on the float were thrilled. I am amazed at how the Guides behind the float were able to dance the WHOLE way around. My feet got blisters just walking.

The one sour point for me was the yobbish element. I caught one lad throwing something at the childcatcher which he obviously found hilarious, and could have been highly dangerous. Another kid threw drinks over the girls dancing. What is it about these killjoys that makes them want to attack people who are doing something positive????

For my part I'd like to thank everyone involved. I thought that the number of floats and the quality were fabulous. Can't wait for next year!

Natalie,

I see you didn't appreciate my attempt at humour.

My apologies.

that's because it wasn't funny, Ben.

Re: Last night's Carnival
- battle of waterlooville (1st Nov 2005 - 14:58:08)

does seem a little suspect to me that an entry can win "best over all" when they didnt even win there own class.... hmmmmmmmmmmm..... surely "best over all entry" should be decided from the WINNERS of the individual classes - like most other parades ive been involved with do?!?!?!

Re: Last night's Carnival
- Alex Smith (1st Nov 2005 - 17:53:35)

How bizarre!

I was at the carnival but did not notice or hear that.

Thoroughly enjoyed this years carnival, but does anyone think there was fewer floats than in previous years?

And now the nights are drawing in!

Re: Last night's Carnival
- David (2nd Nov 2005 - 11:49:00)

This years judging has confused a lot of people it seems, even the judges brought in by the carnival committee. The facts as I understand them is that NO other cup was supposed to be presented to the Overall Winner.

"The Float winning Overall CANNOT get a cup in their appropriate section."

The Guides & Brownies float won Best Overall and therefore should not have received another cup. I think a well done to the girls taking part in the float, the dads for assembling the float on the day, the girls for the things they made and painted for the float and the people responsible for organising the whole thing is the appropriate comment.

And this confusion has happened partly because the Bonfire & Carnival Committee are overstretched and need more members to help continue this remarkable event over the coming years.

So, how many of you reading these posts on Talkback are going to come forward and help them???

FYI - Next meeting at Parish Council Office Tuesday 8th November 8.15pm - see you there!

Re: Last night's Carnival
- battle of waterlooville (2nd Nov 2005 - 12:09:38)

in that case then, (IMHO) the rules need changing as it does seem a bit unfair that the float percieved to be the best overall cannot be the best in their class..... pretty much every other parade/carnival that ive been involved with judges the individual classes... the winners of the classes are then judged again to decided the best in show... simple really... why doesnt liphook do it like this.... i dont think anybody would be particually arsed if a float won 2 cups, if the judging was a little clearer (and fairer)

Re: Last night's Carnival
- Ben Lawrance (2nd Nov 2005 - 12:34:59)

Hmmm. Something doesn't sound quite right here.

I've noticed for the last couple of years that the judging has been slightly strange.

Who are the judges?? What envolvements do they have with local organisations??

Re: Last night's Carnival
- Mike Grimes (3rd Nov 2005 - 00:39:01)

Well that explains it then, the Guides and Brownies had a fantastic float which was judged best overall, and very well done to them and all invoved with the production, but they were forced to parade with a sticker on the front of the float that said "Second" because they were not allowed to be "First" twice.

Maybe it would be fairer if everybody had a "First" sticker and if there were too many good entries then some should be transferred to other carnivals and their poorer entries transferred to our's.

Oh, and the explanation now appears to be that there aren't enough volunteers. You only need one to know how to do it properly.

I will gladly help with next years carnival and my children will, in all likelyhood, be taking part in it as well, but I would not like my traditionalist views to offend.

Re: Last night's Carnival
- LippyChick (3rd Nov 2005 - 09:27:17)

Hmm

I'm wondering why this hasn't been flagged up as an issue before. I have to say that I agree wholeheartedly with Mike, having been told we were best overall it's a bit galling to have to show off our 'second place' award. Surely if the rules are as explained earlier, this issue would have become apparent on previous years.

It makes perfect sense, that the best float in each category wins first place, and then the best of these wins best overall. Why should anyone believe that a float is best overall when it can't win it's class?

I'm in danger of sounding like one of those Grumpy Old Women on the telly. The reason that everyone worked so damn hard on their floats wasn't to win first prize or even best overall, but because we wanted to take part, and wanted to show just how well we could do. The winning part is a little bit academic.

Oh and Mike, by the way I'm with you, happy to help out the Carnival Committee next year meself if their problem is not enough manpower.

- Taz Man (3rd Nov 2005 - 16:04:48)

Hi All

All I can say is the carnival was fantastic, one of the best turn outs for a long time. Yes and again the judging was very strange.
I must ask how a 2nd in its class float can win best overall float. In the past it had always been if you won best overall float you did not get a 1st, 2nd or 3rd prize for your class.
But I did hear on the grape vine that the organisers of the brownies float did tell the judges that they could keep the 2nd prise cup if that was all they were getting.
Any way less of that what is even more strange if you get todays Liphook herald and there is not even 1 picture of the Newtonies (Shark Tale) or the Liklie lads (Gospel) in it. Now that is bad.

Any way it was a good night

- Jane McCoy (3rd Nov 2005 - 17:14:52)

I was the organiser of the Brownies & Guide float and I can catergorically state that we did not tell them to keep the prize, however I did dispute the catergory we were put in as we had over 50 children on our float. The cup that was presented to us was for the under 50.
There in lies the confusion, it is my belief that we came 1st in our true catergory and ended up with the second prize cup through confusion. We are happy to give it back (the 2nd prize cup) as its causing so much controversy.
The Petersfield Post has wonderful colourful photos of all the floats you mentioned that were not in the Herald.
We were not in the post but happy to make front page of the Herald.
Anyway see you all next year!.......
