Chestnuts
- Katy (13th Nov 2011 - 12:49:17)

Hi

Does anyone know where I can buy chestnuts locally please to roast in our fire? The only ones I have managed to find so far were in Devon!

Thanks

Katy

the fruit & veg shop in Bordon always used to have them at this time of year. I don't know how many other people use that shop but I think it is fantastic.

Applegarth farmshop may have them too.

Try Sainsburys - they had some last week

Try picking your own there are so many around. My boys love going and collecting them, then I put them in soups or roast them.

Thanks everyone for your help so far, will try Applegarth. I must have missed them in Sainsburys as I have been scouring the aisles for weeks. All I seem to see is mixed nuts, still the search continues!

Wouldn't know where to start picking them, probably end up eating conkers!!!!

Cheers

Katy

To put you out of your misery, and so you don't try and eat a horse chestnut:

I bought some nice ones from Lidl in Bordon. Delicious.

Thanks Richard, that was brilliant. I won't show my ignorance by saying I thought the fuzzy prickly nuts were beech nuts not chestnuts! Now ready to go foraging

Cheers

Beech nuts are also edible, but the jury seems to be out on horse chestnuts (conkers). I was always told as a child that they were inedible, buit this may just be passed down hearsay

Horse chestnuts are poisonous! OK to handle but you probably wouldn't want to eat a whole one....

Apparently the poison can be drawn out by a process similar to this one: http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/409487, but I for one will NOT be trying them :)

Hi Everyone, you will be relieved to hear my hunt for chestnuts is over. After spending 5 days in the New Forest last week to no avail I spotted them in Sainsburys this afternoon, £2 a bag - 50% off!!!

Looking forward to roasting them at the weekend but thanks to you all, especially Richard for your tips. I am still on the look out in the wilds :)
