Child Tax Credit
- Mike Grimes (21st Oct 2005 - 01:24:37)

Sadly, I will earn less than £52,500 this year so the Tax Credit Office of HM Revenue and Customs chose today to confirm to my wife and I, separately, how much child tax credit she will receive this year. Each letter contained a 20 page booklet explaining the system for 2005/06. These were, essentially, identical to the letters we both received in June this year each containing the same 20 page booklet.

In the same post today, we both received two similar letters (each complete with the 20 page booklet) telling us that she had received in the previous tax year (2004/2005) exactly the same amount as she should expect this year.

Also, in the same post today, we both received another two similar letters (each complete with the same 20 page booklet) telling us that she had received in the prior tax year (2003/2004) almost exactly the same amount as she should expect this year and last.

This equates to sixteen almost identical separate mailings over the last 2-3 years (six of them today).

I presume that most families in the UK are receiving their six fat white envelopes about now telling them how (not very) much they'd received.

Perhaps if ALL families received the support then the elimination of wasteful bureaucracy might allow each to receive more. But, somehow, that would not be fair.

This is a bit like the statements (and accompanying 10 page explanation booklets) I keep getting from the inland revenue telling me I owe them nothing. I would imagine that everyone else that was clear on their tax obligations also received the same...what a waste of money!

As Flanders and Swann put it "It all makes work for the working man today"
