Hi,
The cost of homes for refugee's is not important. To there plight, and to live any type of existence, wish them well.

@'p'aul - I will try your argument with my son and daughter-in-law who as first time buyers are working excessive hours and saving every penny to try to buy a house.

Well isn't it good, half a million pounds for a family house isn't even much nowadays, if they are accepted as refugees or are claiming asylum they need to be housed by law, the council has zero choice and it's way cheaper than hotels. They take priority because they don't speak the language, have family here or know the area, this makes them the most vulnerable group, they get a lot of prejudice, we moan that we're struggling to pay a mortgage but most of us are not really and at least we have a house! If I arrived in a new country fleeing in fear, I'd hope they'd give me a house and some help.

@Local - £500k ‘not much’ for a house? As in, a FREE house?
You do know your taxes - and your children’s, and their children’s - will be paying for this?

They aren't given the house, they are allowed to stay there, eventually one day unless they exercise a right to buy in the future, that house will revert back to the council, it works out a lot cheaper than paying for hotels as anybody who has ever bought a house will know, unless property prices fall and interest rates rise, the council will have made a good investment, we should support more of this thinking. Usually refugees will go on to contribute far more to society than we give them, historically refugees have far excelled the complacent existing population in terms of enterprise, education etc. Let's not begrudge a little given now, it's an investment for theirs and our future, without it our population is getting too old, we are living in great times, we need them, they need us, it's mutual, it's actually a good council policy for once, reminiscent of the past when councils were efficient!

Well after yesterday's news following the dropping of the super-injunction, I guess we finally know why EHDC spent up to £3.7m on new homes for Afghan's in our area.

Re: EHDC spends £3.7m on new homes in Bordon
- a local welcome (16th Jul 2025 - 10:30:35)
I often wonder if people read articles properly, these aren't ordinary refugees fleeing ordinary persecution or death etc, these are Afghan (1 house) and Ukrainians (12 houses) who we should welcome.
I read just yesterday in the papers how badly we treated many of our Afghan allies who worked with the British forces in Afghanistan to try and help us win, they were refused sanctuary here after we lost, leaving them at the mercy of the Afghans who then saw them as traitors and to top it all their data was then accidentally breached!
The same with Ukrainians, they are welcome here in Britain as they are so much like us they often fit in perfectly and the war there is far from finished and shows no sign of abating, with over a million young men dead and wounded on both sides and counting.
We should be grateful that it is them not us fighting, the cost of houses shouldn't come into it.
Let's remember these are not the 'ordinary refugees' everyone including the government is moaning about, but our allies and/or Europeans like us. Not that they are less deserving if homes under our legally binding international obligations on Refugee Laws we have signed up to.
I was at the beach last week and just about every accent I heard was either Eastern European or non European, I was thinking how grateful we should be for the Eastern Europeans or there would be no European accents there at all, so let's welcome them with open arms, they are our future, they come with families and children and that's exactly what this ageing country needs, the cost will soon be repaid over the years.
We are still the 5th richest country in the world, let's act like it!

Are these the Afghans that assisted British forces as translators etc and their family’s against the Taliban whom are repressive monsters?
If so welcome to Bordon and thankyou for protecting the lives of our soldiers in a war that albeit we shouldn’t have been involved in, but then that isn’t these Afghans fault either.
Immigrants aren’t the problem, sure with everyone there will be some problems but “the boats” are a distraction from whom is really screwing you and this country, one definition of capitalism is to extract and squeeze the salary’s of the ordinary worker… it’s the big guys, the billionaires whom pay no tax you should be looking at, but they have all purchased media and are feeding you the idea that it’s your neighbour or migrant is your problem.
But alias these words won’t find any traction as many citizens are good little complaint suckers gobbling up the media and it’s aims as it’s served up to you.

This information has been released for one reason only, to discredit the previous government, the only thing this bunch of goons is any good at. Will they still be referring to "what we inherited from the previous government" in four years time or will they be taking any responsibility by then? I don't think so.

Hi,
I am all for humanity, helping in others in times of stress, and a roof over their heads.
But why not prioritize British people first. The homeless, and families living in vans etc.
Yes help non-nationals for asylum, when we have accommodation spare. Also the country tax-paying affordability, to facilitate the requirement.
History tells us, EHDC decision making for future property profit, has not always worked out well. They have invested in commercial, and residential property before.
One costly failed attempt was the investment in the former Travelodge, on the Liphook By-pass (now McDonald's).
The Council have experienced reduction in income, and the cost of vacant units in various projects.
I rest my case m'lord...
