snow socks v chains?

i have a toyota pick up and wondered if anyone has an opinion on snow chains or socks?
just thinking ahead as my truck is not 4x4 and struggles in the snow

I drive a Golf, and last winter used both - the socks are great, through not designed for long-term use really, just now and then, although our milkman used them (that's where I got the idea) and he didn't have any downtime at all, and they lasted 2 weeks before finally wearing out! Very good.
