Liphook Carnival
- Janet A (24th Oct 2011 - 11:33:14)
Is there an online version of the Liphook Carnival programme anywhere - or can someone let me know what time the various events are happening? We don't have a programme delivered to us any more so I never know what's going on. Thanks.

Hello
Yes this website is completely up to date! The route and timings have remained the same for many years. There will also be full coverage in Herald and Petersfield Post this week.
We don't produce a programme anymore as it was so expensive and with the Carnival now costing more to put on, we had to economise in some areas. Hope you can understand our dilemma!
Look forward to seeing you on Saturday night!
Kind regards
Karen Feeney

Anchor Garage is putting in a \'float\' this year, the idea is to throw a coin to hit a fish and make a wish. All proceeds are for the Carnival fund, as we all know to put on such an event cost a lot of money so we hope you will support us and have a go.

Oh dear!! Having been assured on this thread that the schedule on this website was correct, we opted to arrive in time for the second pass of the procession, at 8.30pm, as stated on the timetable - on;y to find that we had missed it and it had taken place much earlier!
Was there a mistake in the schedule - or did the procession pass much more quickly than expected??

As the square marshal, nomily in charge of the Carnival progress through the village, let me offer my apologies to the person who arrived to see the second pass. and missed it.
Liphook Carnival is a very imprecice affair. Until the floats start to arrive in Longmoor Road for judging we never know how many there will be, or indeed how looooong they will be.
Add to that various steam engines, preserved fire engines, fancy dress etc and I am sure you will appreciate that is is very much a moveable feast.
As it happens there was a fifteen minute delay in starting the first pass through the villge so in fact the second pass should have been, and probably was a little later than planned.
I am sorry you missed it. Do look at the photos on this site and I am sure you will see just how wonderful it was.
Might I suggest that you make time to take in the first pass next year which I am cinfident will start at 7.00pm
Best wishes

I must say that the floats that I saw this year were outstanding. There were sadly not as many floats as normal, but hope next year there will be a few more. Maybe Aliance Cornhill and other local businesses will put something in. A good advert for some of the sponsors to the right of this page, Old Thorns, A3 Car Rentals, Passfield self Storage, Liphook Travel.
As normal there were some really do dance routines, the Monkies (likely Lads) got the crowd joining in. The new townies had a wicked float with what was clearly a large amount of work. I was waiting for the Deers huts space shuttle to take off in the square.
My wifes family live in Somerset where they also have a Carnival. They have a mixture of Large and Small floats spread out between each other, maybe we could do that? would encourage more smaller floats to join in and help keep the carnival going.

Re: Liphook Carnival
- Janet A (30th Oct 2011 - 15:45:12)
It definitely couldn't have been later than planned, Paul, because we arrived at 8.20 and it wasn't scheduled to begin until 8.30! Maybe the schedule could have made it clearer that the timing was likely to out by a wide margin. Had we known, we would certainly have come earlier.
Anyway, enough ranting from me! The fireworks were good and from the photos, looks like the floats were great. A great deal of hard work must have gone into the making of them. Thanks to the organisers and all the volunteers for all their hard work too.

- Jay (30th Oct 2011 - 19:57:20)
Thanks for the photos and to all the organisers and contributors!
We thought the carnival seemed shorter than usual - now we realise that the bands, dancers, football team? and some floats didn't even come down the Headley Road but presumably went off down the Longmoor Road when they passed through The Square the second time around.
Shame - it's too crowded for my parents to watch from The Square or stand out along the route so our extended family and friends have watched from outside their house in the Headley Road for the last 50 years that I know of. Looks like we'll have to think of something else for next year - it's too good to miss!

Re: Liphook Carnival
- Andy Stevenson (30th Oct 2011 - 21:58:58)
Jay,
I do think they should have the floats going down the headly road and back though the avenue, just gives a bit more space for people along the route. I walked down the headly road just after the carnival started and waiting for the floats to return back though. we have two kids so when the few floats that did come down the headley road came down gave the kids a change to see the floats properly.
I would like them to have the route starting in Longmoor Road then doing the lap down to the station, then via midhurst road (sainsburys/green) and back in to the square and down headly road and back up longmoor road, then peel off to various parking locations.
There will be comments made on this from people but I want to see the Carnival going in a few years and would like the tradition to carry on for years.

What is the future of the carnival? ive heard today that next year it might not be going ahead?
is there a way in which local people can put their ideas on here so that the carnival committee can see if there is anything we can do to help keep this tradition going?

Re: Liphook Carnival
- Andy Stevenson (31st Oct 2011 - 18:45:49)
I have had an idea, which i hope will help, why not have a small meeting with the main people from each of the carnival floats and then the committee its self. They would then be able to try and sort out any small problems and maybe have new ideas on how to keep it going ?

This is the first we have heard that there won't be a Carnival next year - afterall it will be the 110th!!!
Karen, our ChairLady, is away on a well deserved holiday at present, but once she is back - she will look at all your lovely comments/ideas and come back to you.
Glad so many people enjoy it as much as we do!

We always look forward to the carnival. I'm not quite sure what happened this year - we turned up in Station Road at about 7.10 in time to see something fairly noisy disappearing past the station. Then we walked round the corner and another float appeared. Then nothing more for 10 mins or so, it seemed as though some of the floats were going a bit quickly and some very slowly, with quite long gaps. It just wasn't quite as synchronised as usual
They were very good, but the atmosphere away from the square didn't seem as jolly this year and the collectors went by so quickly we didn't have time to put all our coins in!!

Re: Liphook Carnival
- Karen Feeney (6th Nov 2011 - 09:42:15)
Dear All
Thank you for your comments, I will try and respond to the queries and points that have been raised.
1. There will be a carnival next year. I have no idea where these stories start. I can assure you that we have the blessing of all concerned and so the future of Liphook Carnival is safe.
2. I was not aware that some floats did not go down the Headley Road. It was organised that the Bournemouth Carnival Band left the procession via Longmoor Road and that the Ambulance and Fire Engines left via London Road (as usual) but as far as I was aware everybody else followed the usual route down the Headley Road. I will investigate further if this was the case.
3. The Queen's float was late coming into the Square hence the gap in the procession. This will be addressed next year.
4. Meeting with the float builders - trust me, that would be difficult to organise and not necessary. We don't know until the actual night who is going to turn up to take part. It is mostly people that have taken part for many, many years, They know the procedure, they know the route, they know what to do.
5. Collectors walking fast - not much I can do about that. We need more money collectors on the night so any volunteers would be welcomed with open arms.
6. The Carnival Committee (and their long suffering families) are all volunteers who put in hours of work to put on, not just the Carnival, but all the other fund raising events throughout the year. It is hard work and it is all done for the community by people who care about the village and want to continue this long standing tradition. With the best will in the world, there will be hiccups on the night, and if a gap in the procession is the only real issue, then I am not going to lose any sleep over that one. We welcome positive comments because, it is us who give up our weekends, evenings and forfeit watching the Carnival with our own children for the sake of everyone else in the village.
We do need more help on the night, we do need more carnival committee members. We need fresh ideas and new enthusiasm, so to all the people who feel they may have something to contribute to the committee, please come along to our AGM in February - date will be posted on this site soon. You will be made to feel very welcome and very swiftly given a job to do!
Best wishes
Karen

Just catching up on talkback and saw this thread. Cor blimey - some people are sooo picky!
i thought the carnival was fab! My family and I THOROUGHLY enjoyed it! I didnt notice a gap in the procession and indeed we stayed to see it come past again just because we thought it was so good! I thought the standard of floats was exceptional this year - well done all those who put on a great show! Loved the Deers Hut Shuttle and Noahs Ark!
I was incredibly impressed with how well organised the whole event was, exemplified when there was a First responder and then an ambulance came through the village. They got through the crowd with great speed (no slower than if there were the usual busy traffic) and this was all down to the organisers and helpers.
I am proud of the Liphook Carnival and we always invite friends from far and wide to come along and join in the fun and they are always impressed with how fab our little village is!
Well done Karen and the team!!! And a massive thank you to you and your families!
Helen

ps. I hope that everyone who has had a say on here goes along to the AGM and more importantly put their hands up to help at the carnival next year!

LONG LIVE LIPHOOK CARNIVAL!
For the first time in a while I joined in the fun of Liphook Carnival this year with my father (for those that know us, no we didn't come to blows building the float.....lol) and about 20 others as "Noahs Party Ark". What a great evening we all had!
To all those spectators watching the Carnival (thanks for your applause, cheers and donations by the way) I can whole heartly reccommend taking part.
As Karen says there is no theme and no special requirements, just enthusiasm and above all a willingness to muck in and have FUN!
Without the Carnival Committe's hard work the Carnival won't happen but more importantly without people entering floats (big or small, motorised or push/pull, trade or fancy dress) there will be nothing to watch and nobody rattling their tins for your donations to local causes.
We were lucky enough to win 3 cups and I was so proud to notice on one of them the first group to win it in 1965, the year I was born :-( , were Ripsley Cricket Club of which my father was part of. It's people like him and all the other "regular" participants who have entered floats for decades which make the Carnival what it is. With all the new residents of this fine town lets hope a few more will take up the mantle and keep it going another 100+ years.
Come on Liphook residents, you've got a whole year to plan it, don't moan it wasn't as good as previous years get involved. You'll never have so much Fun!!!!
From someone who is now proud to say he knows what he's talking about......lol....;-)
PS: Yes the legs still ache but the voice is slowly returning!
PPS: Thank you Dawn and Anne at Lemur Software for the lights and music, couldn't have done it without you.

You said it Darren, without you, the Carnival wouldn't happen. I thank you all for turning up each year and for your hard work and enthusiasm. You are the real stars of the night and I look forward to seeing you next year - go on, persuade your Dad!!

Yes - go on Grandad, if Sir Brucie can sing and dance at 80 odd you can easily do another Carnival!
We love you lots and thank you sooo much for letting us have a decade of sheer fun and enjoyment tinged with that edge of competiveness! Roll on 2012!

Re: Liphook Carnival
- Russ & Irene (8th Nov 2011 - 22:34:09)
The Motley Crew would like to thank Karen her committee and all her fantastic helpers for organising another great carnival.
It looks like I am being persuaded into entering the carnival again (we shall have to see )by all the family, local ones as well as the ones who come from Manchester and Worcester who help build the float and make the costumes. We have all loved doing it and we have a lot of fun but what I want to know is where are all the young ones of the village? When I was on the float with Ripsley Cricket Club back in 1965 when the overall cup was first presented, along with Trevor Moss who this year was the Keystone Cops and John Carver a long standing member of the Deers Hut float and at the same time Irene was on family floats, all the clubs Cricket, Football, Pubs, Clubs, Housing Estates and loads of trade entrees joined in the fun of the carnival. It does not have to cost much just a little imagination. You don’t need a big lorry just a small trailer either push and pulled or on the back of a car. Or why not just dress up on your own or with the family and walk round the route collecting money. Its great fun and you have a good laugh. So come on everyone join in the fun. You have got a whole year to sort it out. Once you have been in it you will be hooked for life as we and all our family and friends are. So as next year is the 110th carnival lets support Karen and her helpers to make it a big one. You know it makes sense.
