Support Laundry for the Elderly
- annehall (20th Oct 2011 - 13:50:51)
A number of people are arranging a meeting at the Peak Centre on Thursday 27th [October] at 7p.m.to discuss the continuation of the laundry services for the elderly. The Trustees of Age Concern have decided not to renew the lease although provisions have been made by Age Concern for laundry to be washed at another venue but it is felt however that the purpose built laundry at the rear of the Peak Centre should still be used to give an alernative and convenient facility for the Senior Citizens of Liphook,. If anyone is interested in attending the meeting please feel free to come along and give your support. Thank you!

I really hope people come and support you at this meeting. It is outrageous the facility has been stopped by Age Concern Liphook bearing in mind their huge bank balances. It will be interesting to see how the £40k from the laundry account is spent. Let's hope it doesn't gather dust in the bank with their other £100,000 plus! Check out the Charity Commission website, charity number 900065.
Please people of Liphook go along and show your support at the Peak Centre, I am so pleased they are looking to keep this valuable service going, good luck!

As the laundry was purpose built for this very service and the money has already been donated to keep this service going, I hope the money can be transferred to a new governing committee to keep this essential facility going for the villages most senior residents.
Well done for standing up for what is right and proper.
I hope you get a good turn out on Thursday.

I do hope you good people of Liphook are going to come to the meeting on Thursday evening to show your support to keep our laundry open. If you have lived in Liphook most of your life as I have you will know how hard our parents/grandparents worked to get this wonderful facility for the elderly and their careers and if at all possible we need to keep it open. And it is possible with support from you.
Last year it lost just £500 which is an amount that can be quite easily turned around in the coming year. The rent is not going up and Sainsbury’s have offered to give the laundry all their broken boxes of washing powder which is more than enough for the year.
Just remember we are all getting older, or we may become careers and we may need someone to do our laundry and the service this little room on the side of the Peak Centre offers is fantastic, personal and at minimum cost.

Liphook support laundry
- amy (27th Oct 2011 - 06:40:57)
Have just read the article in the Petersfield Post about the forthcoming meeting at the Peak Centre tonight. Do hope you get lots of support as it appears a lot of people within the village are not happy that it could close.Such a shame when it was built for the special purpose of helping the elderly also it is so much easier to park at the Peak car park when delivering and collecting laundry especially for carers who have a busy schedule to keep. Sorry I cannot attend the Meeting as I am in London until late but will watch with interest the outcome of tonights meeting. Good Luck!!

£500 to run the laundry for a year????? I think not. That would be 12 months wages at £41.66 monthly. What about electricity ,insurance etc etc.
Just because granny used it in 1853 does not mean one should be blinded to the fact that very few people use it. Take the number of people who use it and the anticipated cost of bringing the facilities up to standard, and then look at the alternative of the facility at the laundry in station road, at no extra cost to the present support users, then common sense should prevail and not emotive rubbish.

As i understand it the laundry is only used by roughly 10 to 15 people per week. Surely with the cost of renewing equipment, servicing, rent of the building, employing someone for 3 or 4 days a week to work it, can not be cost effective. If the laundry in station road is prepared to do the same job as was being done here, surely its a no brainer.
I am sure Age Concern can put the money to better use, so that more can benifit!

Hello Boris
You need to get the facts right. Of course the laundry does not cost £500 a year to run. Any sane person would know that it cost a lot more than that. I believe it is in the region of £6000. The £500 you have quoted is the small loss it made last year which has already been covered by Sainsbury’s with free washing powder. As for all your other statements please come to the meeting tonight as I have just read the Liphook Herald report and once again there is conflicting information about the rent which incidentally is not going up for at least 3yrs. All these and other question can be answered and then everyone will know the true facts and we can then decide to go ahead or not.
So Boris we look forward to meeting you tonight. Please make yourself known.
Irene

Hi Boris and Lesley
Let me address some of your comments. Firstly Boris, if you read Irene's comments correctly it says the laundry LOST £500 last year, not that it costs £500 to run. Of course it costs more than £500 to run. However the laundry is a CHARITY not a business, the loss is less than £10 a week which could easily be addressed.
What exactly are the costs to bring it up to date? You haven't put any quotes on here so not sure how you are able to comment on this? You mention the alternative at Station Road. Two things concern me here. The first is that a charity (Age Concern Liphook) is using a private business to do charitable work and therefore subsidinsing them to do so. Despite asking the question I have not been told what the subsidy is, perhaps you know?
Secondly, should the Station Road laundry close in the future what is the provision then for the elderly users? The majority of the machines in the laundry seem to be out of service whenever I have been there.
Lesley, you say that 10 - 15 people a week use the laundy. Since the issue of it closing has been brought to public attention it has been used by 12 - 15 people A DAY. It has also incidentally been used for washing table cloths for Age Concern and washing for a large local business. As there is obviously a growing need then surely the laundry should be given a reprieve for 12 months with a new committee to run and promote it?
As for Age Concern putting the money to better use, you seem to forget they have over £100K languishing in their bank account. I don't see that being spent on any elderley projects do you? It would be nice for them to hand over the £40K from the laundry account to help keep it running. I doubt that will happen though do you? They won't want to loose face.
Hope to see you at the meeting tonight.
Regards
Katy

Many thanks to all the residents that attended the meeting last Thursday. The minutes have now been typed (all 8 pages) and can be read on the notice board at the Peak Centre and at the Age Concern laundry.
The majority of people at the meeting wanted the laundry to continue in it's present form. A small committee of nine people has been formed to try and carry on this fantastic facility for the elderly and disabled of Liphook and the surrounding villages.
The committee is confident the facility can be saved but needs to raise £750 for the lease and then @ £6K to buy a new industrial washing machine, dryer, irong and press. If sufficient funds cannot be raised there is the possibility of leasing the equipment to reduce the inital outlay. Once the equipment is installed it is believed the laundry will be self sufficient. If we can get a few more users this should cover the laundresses's wages. As such if anyone would like to use the facility or knows of any elderly or disabled person who would benefit please contact me via the editor . It costs £6 per bag to be washed, dried and ironed.
Finally, if any local resident or business would like to make a donation, however small, we would be very appreciative. Please contact the treasurer Beth Marr, tel 727173 or pop in to A3 sports, Liphook.
We have a fantastic enthusiastic committee who does not want to see the facility lost, please, please support us.
Thanks
Katy

Does the laundry get any support form the Parish Council? If it doesn't, it should do - even if just to help with the new equipment.

Hi Liz
I am not sure whether Age Concern have previously asked the Parish Council for grants, that is something they will have to answer. However, I must say Eve Hope from the Parish Council has been very supportive with our aims and once we know exactly where we are with our outlay and finances etc in the next two weeks we will definately be approaching them. Thanks for your interest.
