Mobile phone coverage
- E (16th Oct 2011  21:47:10)

What is the best network coverage for mobile phones in liphook?

Orange used to be good and reliable. However, since they merged with T-Mobile my phone seems to go from full signal to none as it pleases, without even moving. I've heard similar stories from others too.

We have four mobile phones in the house...two on O2 and two on Vodafone.

From our experience Vodafone is exceptionally reliable.

Hi, ironically on Saturday my husband and I have both changed our network from Orange to Vodafone for this very reason as Vodafone appears to be the best in this particular area.

For simple voice and SMS messages, I agree, Vodafone has superb coverage. If, however, your phone relies on data (as more and more do - iPhone apps etc.) Vodafone is less good. 3 appears to offer the best data coverage.

O2 has had a very bad anecdotal history in the area.

Vodafone every time for me

My partner and I had O2 for over 10 years and in April this year switched to Vodafone. O2 had some reliability issues locally a couple of years ago (a mast problem we were told) but otherwise no problems. However in our view O2 has far better coverage -we are forever getting 'no signal' from Vodafone and not just in the local area. Will be switching back as soon as the contracts allow unless Vodafone's coverage improves significantly. All would be better if these companies were forced to share masts.

It depends whereabouts in Liphook you are.
Do NOT get Vodafone if you're in the Passfield area as there is virtually no signal at all. My husband has Vodafone - and if he's calling me on his journey home from work, I always know when he's nearing home because the phone cuts out! The signal begins to fail at Hindhead and gets worse as you travel south towards Liphook. I'm amazed that Liphook folk find Vodafone the best network, as we've always though it had terrible coverage in this area!

On mast sharing you'll find that due to opposition to masts the companies do in fact already share masts and in certain cases the cells that are attached to them.
The signal strength received is dependant upon a number of factors. Distance from the mast and whether you're using your phone indoors or outdoors will be key. It will also depend on your phone, how busy the network is when you're trying to access it and even the weather. As one poster has pointed out it will also depend on the type of service you're trying to access, call/sms or data. Calls and sms happily work of the long established 2G infrastructure, data will work on 2.5G/3G, the coverage of which is not as good.
My recommendation is to purchase a 'pay as you go' sim to try with the phone you want to use (where possible as most people get a new phone when signing up for 18 months) and see what works best for you.

Only mast sharing in some cases. Hence a strong 02 signal over the last several years in the Passfield area while Vodafone is often useless (literally). Generally found far more holes in Vodafone coverage than in O2 and not just in the local area. This is on a like for like basis i.e. same phones (my partner broke his zingy new smartphone and used his old one for a while) - still the same (lack of ) Vodafone coverage- even calls only. No chance of 3G if you can't get the basic call signal!

I've never had any problems in Liphook with Vodafone.

Re: Mobile phone coverage

Mary I agree. No problems IN liphook with Vodafone - its the surrounding areas and further afield that are a problem. There is coverage of course but far more gaps in it than O2.
