Plastic recycling locally
- mbc (3rd May 2023 - 11:39:45)

For years now I have been in the habit of washing all my plastic meat trays and various other plastic containers that EHDC don’t recycle.
I have taken them to the bins in Sainsbury’s car park and felt good about doing my bit for the environment.
My shed is now filling up with large bags of clean plastic that I refuse to put in my rubbish bin.
Does anyone know of any other bins locally or if the recycling centre in Bordon has a specific mixed plastics bin?

Tesco's in Bordon take soft plastics, as in bags, if that is of any help. The recycling point is in the store foyer, not outside.

Not particularly local but Tescos next to the Royal Surrey Hospital in Guildford have large bins for household plastic.

Same here plastics building up at home. In a way though I cant blame Sainsburys too much as when they did have the mixed recycling bins selfish idiots were always filling them with any old household waste and lazy idiots would fill them with cardboard without crushing so they were always full.
If we had a half decent local authority that cared a kerbside solution would have been found by now.

EHDC have said they would absolutely love to invest in brand new state of the art industrial recycling factories and all the necessary collection, heating and sorting machinery and workers in order to be able to recycle a greater variety of yoghurt pots with those little pet numbers that are hidden undernearth that you need a magnifying glass to read etc, but it would cost quite a lot of millions and the big question is:

Would all the homeowners be willing to fund this in yet higher council tax, or else would the benefit receivers be willing to fund it by yet further reduced benefits and social services?

We need to let them know what our preference is, (Because the alternative is you wash and take it back to the supermarket yourself as we do now).

These things shouldn't be dictated by some pressure group representing 30 loud people, but a proper referendum of everybody and then even tougher, we need to accept the result:)

PS washing isn't recommended due to the unnecessary use of water and harmful chemicals that damage the water supply, they get washed at the factory anyway!

In Hampshire only plastic which is bottle-shaped can be recycled for the reasons Realist outlines. Other items such as pots, tubs, bags and trays go in the refuse bin, where they are burned in an Energy Waste plant which generates electricity.
