Cash Point Fraud - Steve Read (22nd Sep 2005 - 19:40:29) Just a word of warning to anybody who in the last few weeks has used the cash point at Tesco's in Haslemere. A friend of ours was notified by his bank that he had gone overdrawn with his account. Unable to understand this he went into the bank and sat down with the manager who showed him his recent transactions most of which he had not authorised. After involving the police who through their investigations have traced a large number of people all in the same situation the one thing in common was the cash point at Tesco's. The theory being that a small camera was installed, watching people use their card and pin number, then going to the machine after the victim inserting a bogus card which then downloaded the previous card details. The clever part was the fact that instead of blowing the card on a quick cash withdrawl ie: the maximum, they used it for small but regular cash amounts over about a week which did not set off any alarm bells with the banks up until the victims account was cleared out. Remember if the bank had not alerted him to the fact that he was overdrawn he would have been none the wiser until the monthly statement came in.
