Stop the on street adverts!
- Grumpy (12th Apr 2023 - 12:44:45)
I'm getting very tired of seeing adverts on railings, fences, barriers, around the village. They seem to be everywhere at the moment and it will only get worse. I do not want our village littered with advertising. Right now there are some very big bright banner adverts for a commercial event - it's effective cos I see about ten of them every day. This morning I've seen a local garden center has put up sale signs on loads of lamp posts. It's a slippery slope. The school has a permanent one on the corner of iron hill. I have no idea what can be done about these, if anything. I'm sure the village gets no income from the adverts, but the advertiser gets free adverts at the expense of village aesthetics. Any idea what can be done?

Totally agree only thinking the same this morning. Banners everywhere about stuff not in liphook banners about football in bordon . I remember when lib put flowers on the railing opposite the midhurst road car park they had to take them down because HCC Highways said they didn’t have permission. Perhaps we should take them all down and see what happens.

I also agree-the large ads a couple of schools put up are especially out of place

Totally agree, just another form of rural pollution, from A4 sized sheets attached by cable ties to whatever, to printed banners.
I do though make an exception for Lost Pets.

Agree. If every local business followed (and they might if they see everyone else doing it) then we'll end up in a right mess with signs all over. I checked on Google street view, this does seem like a new thing, I thought it was recent, there are no adverts at the midhurst road car park on street view but now they are covered with them. I suspect these local businesses don't care how the village looks as long as they are making money. Not very community minded.

Placing advertisements on the street furniture such as lamp posts and road signs is illegal and HCC and EHDC will remove them as soon as possible.
Fly posting on hoardings, buildings, BT Boxes, bus shelters, etc. without the owners permission is forbidden. Owners of these properties have every right to remove them.
Fly posting in the Conservation Area in The Square is contrary to the Planning Regulations and is not allowed.

You lot have got far too much time on your hands if you have got time to go around taking down signs.
What's wrong with local business advertising. They need all the help they can get to make a living. For goodness sake there are more important things going on than being angry about banners and signs.

It’s just as bad as fly tipping makes everywhere look shabby. Our village is a lovely place to live the flowers are magnificent LIB do a wonderful job there hard work should not be spoiled by indiscriminate posters which most are nothing to do with liphook. Fine for an event taking place in liphook but take them down again when finished not leave cable ties around the lamp posts .

It does make Liphook look tatty and if they too big can distract drivers. The conservation area particularly needs protecting. The big ones for schools are particularly bad.

Saying nothing about conservation areas, the ones I have issue with are the ones stuck in the middle of roundabouts (particularly outside Sainsburys) which are a distraction or sometimes an obstruction from Highways Agency road-signs and are therefore illegally placed.
When one was persistently removed the offender took to Talkback to moan about there sign being vandalised.
It shouldn't have been there in the first damn place!

Should this be something the Parish council could deal with after all that’s what they are for. As in the title Parish council looking out for the community they have groundsmen that could easily remove posters that should not be there. We have so many very good volunteers and organisations that do a fantastic job around the village it’s time our Parish council took up the slack.

Hi local - not a bad idea but somethings like the lampposts I think and possibly the roundabouts etc are under Hampshire Highways I believe. They should be pestered about this. The pavements are Highways too I believe. It is worth the Parish Councillors leaning on whoever is responsible. Some signs may have been given permission. Perhaps a councillor could look into it and report back on here.

Interesting to see the different reactions to this post on different forums. On Talkback everyone seems to agree with the OP yet on Facebook’s Liphook Community page contributors universally are critical of the OP and are quite strong in their view this type of advertising is okay! Personally, I think the village has bigger problems

The different in Facebook and this forum is one forum has real profiles and many people and the other has about 6 people with 10 fake identities. One supports more creditably and accountability and the other is a troll hole

Ian & Sam I think you may be right but the people of liphook are genuinely concerned about the village trying to keep it a lovely place to live. That’s why we have so many volunteers and groups that work tirelessly to make such a difference to were we live. If we have a clean and good community it rubs off on the people that live here a scruffy run down place breeds crime and anti social behaviour. Haven’t put it very well but have tried.
