I was actually the third car upon this accident and helped get the passengers out thankfully all ok but extremely shocked by what had happened. The accident happened just passed the old Spaniard in the dip, nowhere near the tunnel entrance.
One car had swerved for whatever reason had had collected another car tipping it on its side blocking the carriageway.
There were three children in the car on its side plus the parents, with just one driver in the other vehicle, as stated all extremely shocked but thankfully unharmed.
The worrying points to all of this are the following:

1) Whilst attempting to move some of the debris to try and get the traffic moving, reports were coming in it was held back before the other side of the tunnel at least three vehicles and a motorbike barged their way down the centre of both blocked lanes and drove straight through the accident site nearly wiping out another helper, just when you believed human nature could not stoop any lower.
2) It took 29 mins for the first ambulance to turn up, who then promptly blocked the road we had managed to reopen to get the traffic moving.
3) On 33 mins the first police cars, managed to arrive all blitzing up from Portsmouth direction complete with brooms.
4) On 36 mins a fire engine arrived, or I assume that’s what it was as I managed to leave and get through but could see the flashing lights in my mirror.

These response times are pathetic and as another driver was calling for these services whilst we were running to the scene unsure of what we would find he had decided to call all three. It makes you wonder what might have happened if anybody was seriously hurt or trapped.

My money is driving too fast for the conditions, or driving at a pace beyond the skill level of the driver concerned, or perhasp they were distracted...:)
