This must be 1st class!

Re: Rail fares rising
- Commuter (6th Mar 2023 - 09:24:28)

@Ann, First Class day return (cheapest, M-F) is just shy of £100. £50.30 is now the cheapest day return for weekday travel into Waterloo.

Why on earth does our Railway fares increase every year?..
The Government want more cars off the road & suggest we use Public Transport!!..🤔 So unfair & out priced!!...😡

Re: Rail fares rising
- Realist (6th Mar 2023 - 12:15:08)

Why go to London, your only going to spend a fortune and get mugged!

Seriously though it's ridiculous, i have to visit family in London every so often to go up one day and come back the next is £100 plus just for the train! I have to change and come back to Wandsworth each journey takes two hours at least, squeezed in next to some other poor oinks who can't drive, whereas car is a luxurious door to door in less than an hour, my own music playing and a tenner in fuel, and they say they want us to use public transport not if you live in the country!

I’ve just checked. With a network railcard (£30 per year) you can get a return to london over two days for as little as £31.65….

Without the railcard it’s £41.60

Granted these aren’t travelling at peak times but if you did, then the most expensive fare I can find to london is £55.80 return over two days with no railcard.

I can only see one outcome… a brain drain of talent no longer
commuting to or living in London. The vast majority don’t earn enough to buy or rent there, nor will the salaries be enough to pay the ever increasing rail fares. So much for becoming green and using public transport! 🤷🏼‍♀️

Hi,
Is expensive travel by car or train necessary to expensive cities in our country nowadays?
Environmentally it is a disaster going forward to the generations now, and the future ones.
We need to re- think of other ways of meeting family and friends.
Meeting "halfway" maybe, in an attractive country location for a walk and refreshment, rather than travelling many miles one-way and return.

Re: Rail fares rising
- Dave (7th Mar 2023 - 12:40:10)

@ Paul - explain the logic of two people traveling to meet at midway distance and then both returning to their homes rather that one person travelling the full distance and returning home. The net environmental impact is the same! Once again going forward, nonsense!

- Local Resident (7th Mar 2023 - 13:24:32)

After 1pm, with a network rail card, it is around £17 return to Waterloo.

Still horrifically expensive at peak time, though.

I've been told it's cheaper to buy split tickets online using apps like the Trainline - does anyone have any intel on this?

Cheers.

Local Resident,

Yes it is sometimes cheaper to use split tickets. Trainline automatically does this for you. It’s important to note that the train must stop at the stations on your split tickets otherwise it’s invalid.

Re: Rail fares rising
- Commuter (9th Mar 2023 - 12:08:17)

Split tickets. For tomorrow (Friday), travelling to/from Waterloo a split ticket IS offered on 2 or 3 return trains in the early afternoon.

The saving? £1.60.
The admin fee? £1.99

Interesting that some trains were cancelled during commuting time on Wednesday due to a bit of snow!

- Anon (10th Mar 2023 - 14:58:01)

Please don't use The Trainline. They charge a booking fee.

Use Splitmyfare.com to work out the splits and then book the tickets directly with SWR or any other sites that don't charge a booking fee.

Hint, much cheaper advance tickets are sometimes available from Liss but it would be against the ticket's T&Cs if you were to board/alight from an intermediary station such as unstaffed Liphook ;-)

I used SWR yesterday for the first time in about a year, into Clapham Junction. Train was late, totally overcrowded, full of rubbish and no heating. Good to see the standards are the same.

- Ken Charles (11th Mar 2023 - 16:10:14)

Recently travelled to Edinburgh from Liphook and back by train, cost; £102 including tube. However, a return train from Edinburgh to Glasgow at 7.47am costs £27.20 (a distance of 47.6 miles. A return journey Liphook - Waterloo at the same peak time - £48.40 - a distance of 48.2 miles. An extra £21.20 for an additional 0.6 of a mile!!
