Firing range at night?
- C (16th Feb 2023 - 21:20:59)
Just curious - tonight am hearing what sounds like rapid shots from the firing range from The Maltings. Do they do this as late as 9:15pm? Never heard it before at night.

The ranges will sometimes be used in the evening to practice night shooting. The surrounding mod land of which there is a lot of in this area are used at any hour, exercises and manoeuvres will often take place between sunset and sunrise. We are also in a two month period where there is increased activity hence why some of the areas are currently closed to public.

Yes they do go on manoeuvres at all times of the day and night. Fortunately the night ones are not too often but needs must and all that! We’ve got used to it and it’s fairly short lived.

Of course they do
They're called night shoots
Surprisingly wars don't stop just because it gets dark, so the ability to shoot at night needs to be practised

Just curious that you could live in Liphook and not be aware of the MOD activities that can happen round the clock? Surely you’ve heard the Chinnocks flying over at night as well?

Thanks Anne. Always amazed to see how any genuine question can be turned into an argument on here!
Just to clarify - no issue with the firing, I realise wars don't stop at night, not a long-term resident of Liphook! Now have my answer - thanks!

Years ago,, shortly after moving to the area I went drinking in Hindhead and decided it would be safer to walk home, I got asfar as the Bramshot Common Canadian War Memorial car park and decided to cross the A3 and walk down Rectory Lane towards St Mary's church, as you can't continue safely on the A3 there.
It was going well, except not being too familiar with the common at night, I got a little bit lost and I probably should have turned left when I went straight on but I was trying to find the big central concrete old track/road that runs down the middle, to get my bearings back, it was very dark and I was a bit drunk too!
Suddenly everything lit up in front of me, a line of at least dozen bright lights shone at me and then a line of men appeared out of the bushes and a loud voice boomed 'get off our firing range now or you'll get shot'
I stood very still and shouted back that I was lost and a little drunk and please don't shoot.
Eventually I was escorted back to the road by some very serious men dressed as bushes carrying big guns with night sights and the words of the sergeant major ringing in my ears 'cant you read lad, there are signs everywhere' but I don't think I was in much state to read!
