EHDC Bin Collection email - Victor Meldrew (13th Dec 2022 - 16:37:21) Apparently ~ according to today's latest email ~ Bins whose lids are frozen will not be collected ~ I totally give up ~ when I lived in a very cold part of Europe an announcement like this would have been laughed out of town ~ that coupled with another email to tell us what we should be buying as Christmas Gifts ~ 1984 ??

Re: EHDC Bin Collection email - JH (14th Dec 2022 - 10:20:58) EHDC sell us these bins. If they are prone to sticking lids in cold weather, they have a design fault and are not fit for purpose. Perhaps 100,000 householders asking for their money back might persuade them to ask the precious bin men to get a grip and do their job.

Re: EHDC Bin Collection email - Mr Bin (14th Dec 2022 - 13:58:08) To be fair, if they tip the bin and it doesn't empty that ruins the system, I don't think it's physically possible to expect the binmen to spend their round trying to pry open hundreds of frozen bin lids, we only need to do one each and it only takes a few minutes, but try doing 100 plus. I don't have a solution but maybe line the gap with a bit of newspaper or put a small wedge in-between, a bit of cardboard to stop it freezing shut in the first place, it might have helped if they'd given instructions by the sounds of it.

Re: EHDC Bin Collection email - D (14th Dec 2022 - 14:06:15) Let's look at the logistics of this, rather than the usual snobby Liphook thing of looking down our noses at low paid manual workers. If five seconds is spent freeing off every frozen bin lid it will slow the round down considerably, those at the end of the round might not even get done. I don't think it is asking too much for each of us to make sure our bin lid is free, obviously that is a huge problem to some of us JH, you could, of course, voice your concerns directly to your refuse operatives. Do let us know how you get on.

Re: EHDC Bin Collection email - Victor Meldrew (14th Dec 2022 - 15:57:11) Mr Bin and D As the OP and at the age of 72 with a physical disability I have been freeing my bin lids with one smart bash with my fist ~End Of ~ half a second at most. Refuse collectors are fit and young, the idea it would add too much time is laughable ~ having lived in both Norway and other cold climates this just does not happen.

If it isn't then it could be against their human rights and cannot be permitted, have the legal ramifications been fully considered, the long term health consequences, the unions may have to ballot their members, there could be work to rule, it might be the Winter of Discontent all over again!

Re: EHDC Bin Collection email - Paul (15th Dec 2022 - 08:51:58) Disappointing that some felt the need to turn this thread into an attack on the workers - it seemed to me this was about the nonsense email from EHDC. I don't know how much a laden bid weighs - around 25kgs, maybe more? Once that's turned upside down and the truck runs it's cycle, I can't believe the frost that may have formed will not instantly free up the lid when e.g. 25kgs of rubbish hits it with a bit of speed. It's the fact that EHDC are spending time on something that is so minor in the scheme of things that surprises me. Maybe they can do a TikTok on it next? Kudos to the actual workers though - never an issue with them, they do a great job!

It will be too hot to touch the bins.” In your post dated 15 Dec 2022 you (and I am assuming you are the same Paul) state “Disappointing that some felt the need to turn this thread into an attack on the workers” The EHDC are a Council ie A council is a group of people who come together to consult, deliberate, or make decisions. They don’t empty bins so your posts don’t make sense as in your first post you seem to be attacking the bins workers ie “are they (the workers) too woke to empty a bin” and your second to accuse others of doing so. In fact the only two posters who criticize the men who empty the bins are the OP and JH. The rest are supportive of the workers.

FYI ~ I am probably one of the few in my lane who actually thank the refuse collectors most weeks.

Can someone please tell me where the word fits in the context of a frozen bin lid? It's all very well using these high foluting words but it is a good idea to find out what they actually mean first.

Back in the 1970's when I had a spell as a bin man, bins were not left out on the pavement and they had to be carried and lifted in to the cart. On a positive though we did get Xmas tips

For the record I do not hi-jack every post as you put it and in this particular instance I don’t think my post is hi-jacking this Thread. It is very much to the point. JH’s post stating that “Refuse collectors are fit and young, the idea it would add too much time is laughable” is implying that they too should just get on with the job. That was my interpretation of the two posts - obviously not yours so we must agree to disagree. Paul also obviously thought that these two posts were criticising the workers as he states “Disappointing that some felt the need to turn this thread into an attack on the workers”. None of the other posts were remotely critical of the workers so he must have been referring to these two posts. IMO there must have been some complaints from the bin collectors to EHDC flagging up the ice problem otherwise EHDC would not have sent out the email in the first place and before anyone jumps down my throat that is not that is not a criticism of the bin men. I personally think they do a great job. I don’t really like to retaliate to rude remarks but I could say Victor Meldrew that you should learn how to spell. Your comment, Victor Meldrew and I quote “you need to learn to read” and again “learn to read and comnprehend” apart from the mis-spelling, reminded me of the classic clip from the row on Handforth Parish Council when Jackie Weaver was shouted at with the words “read them and understand them” by a man who had clearly lost the plot. Now this Thread is going off the point and for that I apologise, but that is what happens when posts become personal and people feel the need to defend themselves.

I believe the term originated in America (hence the slavery connotations) so I wouldn't agree that it's the English language evolving, more a case of American terms coming into use over here. But as Ian demonstrates time and time again, this website is not the place for sensible civilized debate.

Re: EHDC Bin Collection email - Penny Williamson (20th Dec 2022 - 13:56:12) I thought it might be good idea to contact EHDC directly to find out why they sent out the email regarding frozen bin lids which has provoked so much controversy. I spoke to a very helpful lady who said that the email had been sent out to homeowners in response to feedback from the bin men concerned about the frozen bin lids and they had to act upon it. Quoting Victor Meldrew I asked why the bin men could not just hit the lids as this was a good way of freeing up the iced lids. She replied that the bin men are not allowed to do that in case the lids become damaged in any way. She also said that it would be a good idea for homeowners to put their bins out on the morning of collection making sure that they were free of ice as the chances on the bin lids icing up before collection was unlikely. I said that in some cases people have to leave work very early and put their bins out the night before, likewise some people put their bins out the night before because sometimes collection is early and the don’t want to miss the collection. She took all this on board and fully understood the situation, but the fact remains EHDC were only responding to the feedback from the concerned bin men.

If you notice that your neighbours’ bins have been collected but yours hasn’t, please report it as missed.

This is a joke! That 'frozen' lid is going to open faster than it takes EHDC to think up a new way of running a nanny state! By July we will be told to pour chilled water on the lids to prevent them melting shut.
